Description	:	Cornelius "Case" William Van Velzen, age 78, of Atlanta, Georgia, formerly of Sioux Center, passed away on December 20, 2010 in his home surrounded by his family. He was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Wayne Kobes officiating. Following the service, the interment will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Read More	Cornelius "Case" William Van Velzen, age 78, of Atlanta, Georgia, formerly of Sioux Center, passed away on December 20, 2010 in his home surrounded by his family. He was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Wayne Kobes officiating. Following the service, the interment will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation will be held after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The family has peace knowing that their husband, father and grandfather has gone to be with his Savior and Lord. Cornelius was born on February 11, 1932, in Sioux Center to William and Susan (Goslinga) Van Velzen. He went to school in Sioux Center and graduated from high school in 1950. He worked for Art Van Wyhe at the Skelly Gas Station during high school. A few years after graduation, he went into the service during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. After the service, he worked for Rons Motor as a parts man and car salesman. In 1957, Cornelius married Carol Zwagerman from Hospers. They lived in Sheldon for a year, where Carol was employed by the telephone company. He continued to work for Rons Motor until Art Van Wyhe purchased the dealership and renamed it Merit Motor. Cornelius continued working for Merit Motor until 1972. He then purchased the dealership and renamed it Van Velzen Pontiac Buick of Sioux Center. Case enjoyed his work. He loved cars and talking to everyone he met. Cornelius was a loving father to his three daughters and a wonderful grandfather to four granddaughters and three grandsons. He attended First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He was an elder, deacon and served as the treasurer for the new church building committee. He also served on the board of Unity Christian High School in Orange City. In the year 2000, Cornelius and Carol decided to retire. They sold the franchise to Ver Hoef Motors in Sioux Center. During their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling. Cornelius also worked for a time for Oolman Funeral Home in Sioux Center. In 2002, they moved to Newport Beach, California. They lived there for three years before moving to Atlanta to be with their daughters. Cornelius and Carol had "hands on" experience helping and loving their young grandchildren. While in Atlanta, they attended Peachtree Presbyterian Church. They also went regularly to hear Dr. Charles Stanley at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta. Sundays were a special time for Cornelius. The family is thankful to God for the life of Cornelius Van Velzen. He will be deeply missed. Survivors include his wife, Carol Van Velzen; three daughters, Dawn, and her husband, Kevin Groeneweg, of Golden, Colorado; Laura Lee Blake, of Atlanta, and her former husband, Jeff; and Sue Ellen, and her husband, David Doctor, of Atlanta; seven grandchildren, Taylor Groeneweg, Connor Groeneweg, Jeffrey Blake, Vandela Blake, Cosette Doctor, Caroline Doctor, and Cornelius Doctor; three sisters and their husbands, Ruth and Marion Van Zandbergen, of Orange City; Eleanor and Ted Vonk, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Mary and Jerry Westling, of Hawarden; and Carol's brothers and sisters and their spouses, Sue Zwagerman and Glenn Zwagerman, both of Phoenix, Arizona; Larry and Lynn Zwagerman, of Ames; Dennis and Linda Zwagerman, of Glendale, Arizona; and Pat Zwagerman, of Marina Del Rey, California. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Ward Van Zandbergen; his wife's parents, Peter and Angeline Zwagerman, and a brother-in-law, Earl Zwagerman. The Van Velzen family prefers memorials to the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee.
