Description	:	Cornelius Goodale died at his home in Brooklyn, Iowa at the age of 76 years 7 months 7 days. He was a Mason and the members of that order read the funeral and burial sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the IOOF Cemetery in Brooklyn, Iowa. Cornelius Goodale was the son of David and Catherine Shaffer Goodale. His father was born on Long Island. He was a farmer by occupation and during the War of 1812 was in the American Service. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a Deacon for many years. He died in Lewis County, NY when about 80 years of age. Catherine was the mother of nine children: Sallie, Nancy, Eliza, Jonathan, Stephen, Nicholas, Harvey, Cornelius and Mary. Catherine was born in Holland. Cornelius spent his boyhood on a farm. His education while a youth was largely obtained by his own efforts. He worked nearly the entire year only attending school when not needed on the farm. When only fourteen he left his father's home, working in a sawmill for five years. He then engaged in carpenter's and joiner's work for six years. In 1855 he went to Illinois where he followed his trade for two years. He then bought a place of forty acres and turned his attention to agricultural. He remained in Whiteside County, Illinois for ten years. He was married to Mary A Lamphere 27 Dec 1856 Scott Co, IA. They were the parents of four children: Linus, Emma, Clark and Frank. Mary was the daughter of Smith and Anna Paddock Lamphere. Her father was a farmer in New York state and about 1849 emigrated to Whiteside County, Illinois. They were both devoted members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1865 he came to Poweshiek County, Iowa residing on section 4 of Bear Creek Township where he has made his home ever since. He was one of the earlier settlers of this part of Iowa. Mary died in 1878. On December 5, 1878 in Montezuma, IA he married Jennie Richardson Gillis the widow of John M Gillis. They had one son Jay and adopted one son Harry. They are members of the Episcopal Church. He is an active Republican and a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
