Schmit, 86 years, of Fremont, NE died Friday, November 2, 2018 at Wisner Care Center at Wisner, NE. Cornelius was born November 21, 1931 at McLean, NE to Cornelius J. and Gertrude (Billerbeck) Schmit. He was raised in the Randolph, NE area and farmed there. He served in the US Army during the Korean War from February 25, 1953 to December 22, 1954. Cornelius married Lucille Aschoff on August 27, 1957 in Randolph. He returned to farming after the service and moved to Arlington in 1984 and worked at Rhea Cattle Company. They moved to Fremont in 1992. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont, Knights of Columbus Council #1497, and V.F.W. Post #8332 of Arlington. He is survived by his wife, Lucille of 61 years; sons, Richard (Sara) Schmit of Fremont, NE, Stephen (Susan) Schmit of North Platte, NE, and Mark (Robyn) Schmit of Eureka, MO; daughters, Mary Jo (Charlie) Ware of Lawrenceville, GA, Vonda (John) Walker of O’Fallon, IL, and Joni (Shawn) Mattingly of Bennington, NE; son-in-law, John Davin of Wildwood, MO; brothers, Henry (Carolyn) Schmit of Osmond, NE, Father Roger Schmit of Conception, MO, Jerome “Jerry” (Pat) Schmit of Norfolk, NE and Norbert (Pat) Schmit of Grove City, PA; sisters, Ann McHugh of Royal, IA, Lucille Knievel of Norfolk, NE and Rita Aschoff of Osmond; and fourteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Michelle Davin; brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Shirley Schmit and sisters, Sister Barbara Schmit and Sister Lucretia Schmit. Funeral Mass will be 10:30A.M., Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont. The Reverend Fathers Walter Nolte, Roger Schmit and Stan Schmit will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 PM to 8 PM with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with Military Honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont.
