Fleming, retired merchant and farmer, is a native of Ohio, born June 20, 1814, and is a son of Peter and Rebecca Fleming, the former a native of South Carolina. Mr. Fleming has acquired a practical education; yet he never attend school one whole year. Fleming, retired merchant and farmer, is a native of Ohio, born June 20, 1814, and is a son of Peter and Rebecca Fleming, the former a native of South Carolina. Mr. Fleming has acquired a practical education; yet he never attend school one whole year. When thirteen years old, his parents removed from Preble County, Ohio to Warren County, Indiana, and settled in this township (Pike), where they entered and purchased 240 acres. C.V. Fleming worked for his father until he was twenty-two years of age, after which he clerked in a store in Old Lebanon several years. Mr. Fleming was married February 8, 1835, to Miss Malinda A. Clifton, daughter of William and Elizabeth Clifton, all natives of Kentucky. This union was blessed with six children - Peter W., William B., James M., Mason T., Frank C. and Jerome; of these, three are deceased; William B. was killed during the late war, at the battle of Stone River. Mr. Fleming built the first business house in West Lebanon and kept the first stock of dry goods, which he continued twelve years. In 1873, Mr. Fleming built his present residence, at a cost of $4,000. He is a Republican, a pioneer of this county, and is as likewise his wife, a member of the Univeralist Church and a liberal citizen." - Counties of Warren, Benton, Jasper and Newton, Indiana, 1883, page 168
