Description	:	Cornie Vos was born on October 7, 1919, at his parents, Kryn B. and Rika (Van Zuuk) Vos, farm home southwest of Leighton, Iowa. He was the youngest of nine children and spoke only the Dutch language until he began school. As a young lad Cornie helped his family with his assigned chores and on March 3, 1933, the family home burned. Subsequently the family divided up living in three different brooder houses until a new home was built. Read More	Cornie Vos was born on October 7, 1919, at his parents, Kryn B. and Rika (Van Zuuk) Vos, farm home southwest of Leighton, Iowa. He was the youngest of nine children and spoke only the Dutch language until he began school. As a young lad Cornie helped his family with his assigned chores and on March 3, 1933, the family home burned. Subsequently the family divided up living in three different brooder houses until a new home was built. Cornie had a God-fearing upbringing and this experience proved to be a valuable lesson for him the remainder of his life and the basis of how he raised his family. On February 13, 1941, Cornie was united in marriage with Gladys Alydia Ver Meer at her parents, Antonie and Johanna (Kolenbrander) Ver Meer, home at Pella, Iowa. Cornie and Gladys moved to a farm northwest of Leighton where they made their home in a chicken coop, due to the loss of their future home by a fire just weeks before they were to be married. Cornie was drafted into the United States Army in August, 1942, which required them to move together to Wilmington, North Carolina. Cornie lived on base while Gladys stayed with a lady and worked at a dime store. Cornie later got to stay with them but had to be back on base by 4:00 a.m. Cornie was a cook and cooked for 150 men 3 times a day. He fed the men in training, 90 day wonderers, before they became officers and was the only one who could cook his captain of the battalion’s T-bone steak. Following his discharge in September, 1943, Cornie and Gladys relocated back to a farm northwest of Leighton and were blessed with three children: Sue Ann, Rick Lee, and Keith Loren. They farmed there for the next 30 years and in 1973 they retired from farming and moved into Pella and made their home at 412 Lincoln Street. Cornie worked for the Farmers Coop in the lumber yard and later delivered feed until he retired. During retirement years he enjoyed helping out at Nicks Greenhouse. Cornie remained active doing wood working projects, many of which are his family’s heirlooms. The most notable for his friends and neighbors were his windmills. The beautiful flowers that adorned their home were proof of the enjoyment he received from tending them. On December 2, 2012, Gladys passed away at their home at the age of 94 years and subsequently in June, 2013, Cornie became a resident at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In February, 2014, he was transferred to Jefferson Place in Pella where he passed away on Friday evening, January 9, 2015, at the age of 95 years. Cornie is survived by his three children and their families: Sue and Glen De Bruin of Pella, Iowa Jim and Ruth De Bruin of Pella Sharla, Zachary, Daniel, Alyson Sharon and Mike Vande Noord of Pella Joshua, Jacob Carol and Jay Kime of Pella Katelyn, Cody Rick and Carolyn (Meinders) Vos of Pella, Iowa Roger and Meri Vos of Des Moines Johanna Cheryl and Eric Van Wyk of Remsen Jalen, Jenna, Jacie Cindy and Doug Van Donselaar of Pella Shane, Cheyanne, Cole, Cooper, Kennedy Keith Vos and Christine (Smithburg) Briggs of Pella Pam and Jon Klyn of Pella Ethan, Taylor Issalena and Wes Van Weelden of New Sharon Kylie, Alexa Cornie was the last surviving member of his original family. He leaves the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bernard and Dorothy Ver Meer, Janice (Ver Meer) and Loren Vander Wert, Alice (Melvin) Ver Meer all of Pella and Pat (Byron) Ver Meer of Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; his parents, K. B. and Rika Vos; his parents-in-law, A. A. and Johanna Ver Meer; and all of his brothers and sisters and their spouses: Ben and Alice Vos, Peter and Henrietta Vos, Harry and Edna Vos, Carrie and Barney Memmelaar, Hattie and John Brummel, Nellie and John Van Zuuk, Elizabeth and Ben Outlaw, Ann and Peter De Boer. Cornie was baptized and a professing member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. He was a member of the Van Veen- Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella and remained active with Veteran’s activities during Veteran’s and Memorial Day. He restored and collected Olivier implements and enjoyed participating in the WHO Tractor ride for many years driving the Oliver 66 he and his sons restored. Perhaps more favorable were the semi annual tractor rides he and his granddaughters organized with family and friends which Cornie attended yet in 2012.
