Description	:	Son of James Jefferson Farmer and Elizabeth Pafford; Husband of Effie Pickney Brewer. Known as "Grandsir" to my father instead of as "Grandfather," Benjamin Franklin Farmer was only 17 when he joined the Confederacy during the Civil War and he served in Brown's 55th TN Regiment. Two weeks after he joined, he was captured at Island #10 and taken prisoner, along with his brother in-law William Bryant Brewer, and cousin, Lewis Brewer, who was a son of Sterling Brewer. "Jim" as he was affectionately known, was taken first with his family members to Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin and finally to the infamous Camp Douglas in Chicago, where the dead Confederates are simply buried in a mass grave. Five months into imprisonment, William Brewer and Lewis Brewer, both died while in prison, and our Benjamin, probably having more than any kid his age could take, took the Oath of Allegiance and was released. Had he not taken the oath, there are a great many of his descendants who would probably not be here today and the courage and bravery he exhibited at such a young age is commendable, honorable, and noteworthy. I am truly honored to be his 2nd great-granddaughter, and proud to pass on stories about him to my own children.
