Corporal DANIEL S. HUTCHINSON, Co. I, 86th Illinois
Daniel S. Hutchinson was born about February 24, 1840, most likely in either Tazewell County or Peoria County in Illinois. He is most likely the son of Henry Myers Hutchinson and Sarah "Sally" (Hill) Hutchinson. Henry Myers Hutchinson was born September 19, 1803 at __________, __________. He was married to Sarah "Sally" Hill on January 22, 1824 in Knox County, Ohio. Sarah was born September 11, 1804/05 in Essex County, New York, the daughter of Josiah Lewis Hill and Submit (Crosby) Hill. Seven children are believed to have been born to Henry and Sarah before his death on August 12, 1841. The children born to Henry and Sarah "Sally" (Hill) Hutchinson include; 1. Mary Jane Hutchinson, born April 23, 1825; died September 14, 1830.
2. William Smith Hutchinson, born September 26, 1827; died May 3, 1914; married to Nancy Ann Fox on March 27, 1851 in ___________ County, ___________.
3. Sarah Ellen Hutchinson, born October 5, 1829; died on November 28, 1851; married to ___________ Griffith.
4. Submit Elizabeth Hutchinson, born February 8, 1832; died on December 23, 1854; married to Simon Hawkins, who was a member of Co. G of the 86th Illinois. Though Simon was not in the same company as Submit's brother, they very likely knew each other.
5. Charity Hutchinson, April 3, 1834; died on July 13, 1851; married to Thomas Neshan on May 3, 1849.
6. Henry M. Hutchinson, born June 26, 1837; died on June 13. 1909
7. Daniel S. Hutchinson, born February 24, 1840 at Peoria, Illinois; died on April 6, 1916 at Burchard, Pawnee County, Nebraska; married to Elizabeth Fox Hayslip on August 20, 1865 in Schuyler County, IL
After Henry's death, Sarah Hutchinson (listed as Hutchison) was married to Nathaniel Clifton on March 27, 1842 in Tazewell County, Illinois. Nathaniel Clifton is found in what is called the LaMarsh Precinct of Peoria County, Illinois in the 1840 census. At that time, this is the way his household appears; 1 Male between the age of 50 & 60 1 Male between 40 & 50 1 Male between 10 & 15 1 Female between 15 & 20 1 Female between 5 & 10
Nathaniel Clifton almost certainly died before the time of the 1850 census. At the time of the 1850 census, Sarah Clifton is found in Peoria County, with two of her sons, who are listed with the last name Hudson in the typed copy of the census rather than Hutchinson, in the Glasford/Mapleton area of Peoria County. A Lysander B. Clifton, age 20, born in Kentucky resides nearby; 3102 Clifton Sarah 45 F Conn 3102 Hudson Henry 14 M Ohio 3102 Hudson Danl. 10 M Ohio
Sarah "Sally" (Hill) Hutchinson Clifton were then married to William Given Dufield, who was also a nearby resident, on June 7, 1853 in Peoria County, Illinois. William Given Dufield, who was born c. 1795 in Virginia and who died on February 28, 1871 in Timber Township, Peoria County, Illinois. This was also his 3rd marriage, he having previously been married 1st about 1817 or 1818 to Sophia __________, who died on July 31, 1840 and whose mortal remains were laid in the Gess/Saylor/Dufield Cemetery near Glasford, Illinois in Peoria County. William was then apparently married to a Nancy Coble, who must have died before the 1850 census, as William Duffield appears in the census unmarried. In the 1860 Census, William Dufield appears in Timber township, Peoria, age "61" with wife Sally (age 54, b. NY), as well as Isaac (age 23, b. VA) and Margaret Melbey (age 19, b. VA), Edwin Wallace (age 12, b. NY), Melvina Dufield (age 4, b. IA); and Isabella Dufield (age 87, b. VA), his mother, apparently. The households of William's daughters Elizabeth Fuller and Sophia Fuller are enumerated on the same page. In the 1870 Census, William appears in Glassford township, Peoria, age "74" with wife Sally (age 66, b. VT) and Melvina M Dufield (age 14, b. IA). The households of several relatives are enumerated on the same page: sister Nancy "McIvoy"; grandson Francis M. Harker; cousin Thomas Given. His daughter Elizabeth Fuller is on the preceding page. One the page following are daughter Ruhana Thompson and son "A. J." Dufield. ESTATE: In the 1870 census, William's property was valued at $10,000. The property of his son, Andrew Jackson Dufield, which was given to him by his father, William, was valued at $7,000. William Dufield died about February 27, 1871 in Timber Township, Peoria County, Illinois at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 16 days. His body was laid to rest beside that of his first wife, Sophia __________, in the Gess/Saylor/Dufield Cemetery, which was bulldozed by the property owner in the mid 1900's. William's name can be found on the only stone which can be found from the bulldozing. William signed his will 18 Feb 1871. It was proved 7 Mar 1871. The administration of his will was completed 19 May 1874; the proceeds of the estate totaled $16,394.07. [See here for calculations on how much that amount would be worth in 2010.] In his will, William Dufield mentions wife, Sally, and all of his children except Isaac. He mentions Malvina M. Duffield, but doesn't describe their relationship. She is not listed among William's heirs in the Petition for Letters Testamentary in William's probate file. She must be a niece or cousin, and is likely the Malvina M. Duffield who married 29 Dec 1872 in Peoria George W. Wolgamot.
Sarah "Sally" (Hill) Hutchinson Clifton Dufield died on June 7th or 8th, 1871 in Timber, Peoria co. IL. Her probate papers include a list of charges paid by "Mrs. Sarah Dufield" to Dr. Allen L. Fahnestock, who commanded the 86th Illinois in 1864 & 1865 and who was a local well known merchant, and lists her children William S., Henry M., and Daniel S. Hutchinson, "all adults." [Death date comes from petition in her probate file — Peoria co. probate file #1580.]
See William Given Dufield's Find A Grave site for more information about him and his family.
Now to continue with the biography of Daniel S. Hutchinson; Daniel S. Hutchinson can not be located for certain in the 1860 census, but there is a good possibility that he is the Daniel Hutchinson, who is listed in Woodland Township of Fulton County, Illinois. He is listed as being 19 and as having been born in Ohio. As noted above, in the 1850 census, Daniel is listed as having been born in Ohio. On August 9, 1862, Daniel S. Hutchinson came over the Peoria County to Lancaster, Illinois where he volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in the Lancaster, Illinois/Timber-Hollis Township area of Peoria County by a well known business man and Lancaster area merchant, Allen L. Fahnestock. At the time he volunteered, Daniel gave his residence as Orion Township in Fulton County, Illinois. He also claimed to have been born in Timber Township of Peoria County, Illinois at this time, the first time he is recorded as having been born in Illinois.

When Fahnestock had about 100 volunteers he led his company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. Fahnestock was elected by the men of the Lancaster, Illinois/Timber-Hollis Township company to serve as their Captain and on August 27, 1862, Fahnestock, and 96 of the other Timber-Hollis Township volunteers, including now Private Daniel S. Hutchinson, were mustered into service as Company I of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out of the gates of Camp Lyon on September 7, 1862, with much fanfare, through the streets of Peoria down to the railroad depot, where they boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana, across the river from Louisville. Three weeks later the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Colonel Daniel McCook's Brigade chasing Confederate troops. On October 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those Confederate troops during the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the next few years. After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate forces withdrew from Kentucky, while the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp. During the next three years, Private Daniel S. Hutchinson would serve faithfully in Co. I as the men of McCook's Brigade served in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Daniel was also a witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, just to name a few. He also participated on General Sherman's famous "March to the Sea". Sometime during the war, Private Daniel S. Hutchinson was elected by the men of Co. I to fill one of the vacant Corporal positions as a sign of his dedication to the service and to his company. After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Corporal Daniel S. Hutchinson was there with the surviving members of the 86th Illinois when they were mustered out of the service in Washington, D.C. They were they sent by train to Chicago, Illinois, where they received their final pay and were discharged. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th were back home with their families in Central Illinois. Daniel S. Hutchinson was married to Elizabeth Fox "Betty" Hayslip on August 20, 1865 in Schuyler County, Illinois. Betty was born on April 13, 1840 in Ohio, the daughter of James Lockhart Hayslip, who had served with Daniel in Co. I of the 86th Illinois and who had been mortally wounded during the only partially successful assault on Cheatham Hill during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 27, 1864. (See James Lockhart Hayslip's Find A Grave site for more information about the Hayslip family.) Only one child is known to have been born to Daniel S. Hutchinson and Elizabeth Fox (Hayslip) Hutchinson. That is; 1.
