Bio by: Wayne Andrews: Henry Clay Irish was born 1842 in New London, Connecticut, the son of Jedediah Randall and Nancy F. Curns Irish. He enlisted in Company C, Connecticut 1st Cavalry Regiment November 25, 1861, was promoted to Full Corporal February 1, 1864, and mustered out on October 26, 1864. The Connecticut 1st Calvary moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the winter of 1862-63 to be reorganized and was serving there during the Gettysburg Campaign. He enlisted in Company C, Connecticut 1st Cavalry Regiment November 25, 1861, was promoted to Full Corporal February 1, 1864, and mustered out on October 26, 1864. The Connecticut 1st Calvary moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the winter of 1862-63 to be reorganized and was serving there during the Gettysburg Campaign. It moved to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, July 5, 1863, and did duty skirmishing with the southern cavalry in that vicinity until January of 1864. The regiment served in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign from August to December. It fought at Cedar Creek, Reams's Station, Five Forks, Yellow Tavern, and Sailor's Creek. It was the 1st CT that escorted General Grant to receive Lee's surrender at Appomatox. The 1st suffered 772 casualties during the war. This was 56% of its strength attesting to its active campaigning. In 1868 Henry married Sarah Keables, daughter of Francis and Eliza Armstrong Keables. She died September 1869 following the birth of their only child Frank H Irish in August 1869. In December 1896 Henry entered the U S National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Togus, Kennebec, Maine where he died on November 23, 1921. His brother John who also served in the 1st CT had his body shipped to Norwich for interment in Yantic Cemetery.
