Description	:	James "Jim" Bickler, a kind and beloved soul, passed away at age 75 on March 17, 2002, at the Horizon Hospice House. He was born to Magdalena and John Bickler on Dec. 5, 1926, in Linton, N.D. Both Jim's parents had passed away before he was 15 years old. This circumstance formed his character and was the seed for his spirit of independence. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and in the occupation of Japan. Following his discharge, Jim returned to Montana and started his career as a painter. Jim's greatest joy was exploring the back roads of Montana. He loved to fish with his buddies and probably tried out every fishing hole in the state. He had a passion for literature and history. Jim could astound you with his knowledge of the history and culture of any location in the world. Jim took great pride in his lifelong membership in the Painter's Union. His biggest disappointment in life was the Painter's Union's loss of his retirement fund, which caused him to live his retirement years in poverty. Jim was preceded in death by his sisters, Angie Bickler and Isabel Marker and his nephews, Bucky Bickler and John Marker. Though he was a solitary man, he had a great love for his family. He is survived by his two brothers, Bill (Doris) of Spokane, Wash., and Victor (Irene) of Billings. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 21, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Interment with Military Honors will be at the Veteran's Section in Mountview Cemetery. Jim was fortunate to be able to spend the last month of his life at the Horizon Hospice House. His family will be forever grateful for the love, respect and compassion he experienced while under their care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, 123 S. 27th St., Billings, MT 59101. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The Billings Gazette - March 18, 2002
