Corporal James Leonard Ray was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Ray served our country until May 16th, 1967 in Kontum, South Vietnam. James was born on September 6, 1941 in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. CPL Ray is on panel 20E, line 010 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year. BURNSVILLE: Services for Cpl James Leonard Ray, 25, who was killed in Vietnam May 16, 1967, will be held at 230pm Wednesday in Bowditch Union Church at Micavile. The Reverend Sam Moore and the Reverend Roscoe Briggs will officiate. Burial will be in Carraway Cemetery. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by a detachment from Fort Jackson, SC who will serve as pallbearers. He was a graduate of Yancey High School and had been in military service since September, 1966. Surviving are the widow, Mrs Shirley Wheeler Ray of Spruce Pine; the mother, Mrs James Ray of Micaville; two sisters, Mrs Robert Hall of Middleton, Connecticut and Mrs Bob Ingram of Spruce Pine; three brothers, Dan, Lloyd and Phillip Ray, all of the Micaville; and the grandmother, Mrs John Ray, of Micaville. The body will remain at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to services. He was the husband of Mrs Shirley W Ray, 145 Reservoir Road, Spruce Pine, NC, Son of James D Ray and Maxie V Hoover Ray. He served with Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division(AMBL), USARV. He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
