Description	:	Leslie Stevenson, son of John G. and Elsie M. Lund Stevenson, was born at Ephraim, Utah, June 28, 1890. At the age of 14, he moved with his family to Raymond, Alberta, Canada. While serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pennsylvania in 1918, he was drafted into the army. He received his military training in Petersburg, Virginia and was made a corporal in Company F, 319th Infantry. He left for France in May of 1918. At the age of 14, he moved with his family to Raymond, Alberta, Canada. While serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pennsylvania in 1918, he was drafted into the army. He received his military training in Petersburg, Virginia and was made a corporal in Company F, 319th Infantry. He left for France in May of 1918. The last letter from him was written October 3 and was received by his mother November 6. The next day a telegram came announcing he had been killed in action on the 6th of October. An officer of Corporal Stevenson's company, wounded himself, wrote the account of his death to his mother while lying in a Paris hospital. The letter in part follows: "Corporal Stevenson made the supreme sacrifice in the most heroic manner following out one of the principles he had so often recalled to the boys at Sunday services, ‘Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life for another.' "On Sunday, October 6th, during a strong counter-attack by the enemy in the Bois de Argonne in the Meuse River sector, Corporal Stevenson discovered one of our boys very badly wounded, lying near the lines. In full view of the enemy and under terrible machine-gun and artillery fire, Stevenson dashed out and attempted to bandage the wounded soldier, and, while making this attempt, a machine-gun bullet ended his life. He was buried where he fell, with a simple wooden cross as a marker – the emblem of the sacrifice of our heroic dead. "Up to the time of his death he had fought most valiantly. I was present at the time he was killed and the noble deed is more impressed in my memory than anything I have ever experienced in the war. I recommended him for the Distinguished Service Cross, a poor compensation indeed for his brave deed, but it will at least be a reminder of his last act in the days to come." His body was later shipped home to Raymond and his mother insisted that the casket be opened so that they could be sure it was really him. Leslie died on October 6, 1918. Coincidentally on that same day German chancellor Max von Baden sent a message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice on the basis of Wilson's 14 points.
