The flag, before it fell into rebel hands,... Read More	Born in Lick Creek Twsp., Van Buren Co., Ia. He enlisted as an 18 yr. old on June 24,1861 in Co. H, 5th Iowa Infantry. Wounded slightly in the head Sept.19,1862 at the Battle of Iuka, Ms. Wounded in the thumb May 16,1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. Promoted 3rd Corp. July 1,1863. Captured while acting as color corporal and bearing a stand of colors, along with 81 other members of the 5th Iowa, half of whom would die in captivity, on Nov.25,1863 at the Battle of Mission Ridge, Tn. The flag, before it fell into rebel hands, was seized by those nearest it, its stars torn out and secreted about the persons who were about to be captured. John Whitten saved one such star and carried it with him during his captivity. That star, framed and preserved, is still in the capital at Des Moines, Ia. After a trying experience at Belle Isle Prison in Richmond, Va.and Andersonville Prison in Georgia he was exchanged and returned to union lines at Jacksonville, Fl. on April 28,1865. He kept a journal of his captivity during this period that makes for an interesting read. Following a year and a half confinement he finally reached home on June 1, 1865 at Doud's Station, Ia. and had to be assisted from the train, his appearance reported as ghastly. He was discharged July 7, 1865 at Clinton, Ia. After trying farming for a time he attended Iowa State College at Ames before returning to Van Buren Co. He married Miss Ella Lippincott Rice of Farmington,Van Buren Co., Ia. on Oct.3,1872. He was elected County Auditor in the fall of 1879 and re-elected in 1881, serving two full terms. On Jan.1,1885 he received appointment as Deputy Treasurer of Iowa, a position which he held until Jan.1,1891. At the 1886 reunion of the 5th Iowa vets he was elected Treasurer for the 1887 Reunion Committee. Residing at Farmington, Ia. his wife was committed to the State Hospital at Mt. Pleasant, Ia. at some point between 1895 and 1900. Corp. Whitten spent his last years alone before dying on Sept.7,1902 at Farmington.
