Description	:	CORPORAL US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II John Junior Coyne enlisted in the Marine Corps on 10 January, 1942 from Burlington, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 10th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 1 July 1942 embarked USS President Adams (AP-38) at San Diego for overseas movement. 25 July 1942 landing rehearsals at Koro in the Fiji Islands. 7 August 1942 off shore reserve attached to the 1st Marine Division during D-Day landing operations in the Solomons. 8 August 1942 landed on... Joined the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Russell. 16-30 April, 1943 Sick USN Base Hospital 4, Wellington, New Zealand. June, 1943 returned to US as Medical Patient and assigned to Casual Company Number 2, MarDet, USNH San Diego, CA. 1-22 July, 1943 on furlough. Upon discharge from Hospital assigned to 1st Guard Company, Guard Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. 1-13 January, 1944 on furlough. 21 March, 1944 assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. 12 August, 1944 embarked USS Baxter (APA-94) at San Diego for movement overseas. 18 August, 1944 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela. 1 November, 1944 promoted to Corporal Demolition Specialist (MOS 533). 10 January, 1945 embarked LST 756 at Camp Drewes, Hawaii. 17 January, 1945 embarked the USS Hansford (APA-106) at Lahaina Roads, Maui. 19-21 January, 1945 at Pearl Harbor. 22-23 January, 1945 landing rehearsals at Maui. 24-27 January, 1945 at Pearl Harbor. 5-7 February, 1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 12 February, 1945 embarked on an LST at Saipan. 16 February, 1945 left the Marianas. 19 February, 1945 landed on Red Beach Two on Iwo Jima during D-Day and particiated in combat operations until Killed in Action 21 March, 1945 Next of Kin: Parents, Mr and Mrs Eugene E Coyne, 3207 Valley Street, Burlington, Iowa. Initially buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima. 1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Wall Lake, Iowa.
