Ric Harvel officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery. Mr. Koontz, who retired from the U.S. Army, died April 5, 1999 at Newark Healthcare Center. He was born Sept. 1, 1924, in St. Louisville to the late Edwin S. and Zula V. (Smith) Koontz. Mr. Koontz was a member of Utica United Methodist Church, life member of American Legion Post 92, and life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 23. At the age of 17, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Following basic training, he saw extensive combat action on Guadalcanal, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. Following Guadalcanal, he landed with his brother Marines on Tarawa Beach, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Medal. After his recovery he next saw combat action during the invasion of Leyte in the Philippine Islands, where he was again wounded, receiving his second Purple Heart. He was discharged from the Marine Corps in 1946. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and was sent to Korea where he was seriously wounded, resulting in award of his third Purple Heart. He retired from the Army in 1952. In addition to the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bob was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. He is survived by several cousins and many close friends. He was preceded in death by one sister.
