Men ranging from 83 to 100 years of age - who were in the prime of their life when Sherman marched to the sea - who began their lives when our country was still young and still struggling for supremacy among the other nations of the world. These men lived in a time when the candles were used for lighting and the horse and buggy were universal means of travel. In this picture were a total of almost nine centuries of years and average of over 87 years for each man, who are well past the allotted time of three score and ten. It is interesting not, that nearly all these grand old citizens spent a large part of their lives in the open air, and are still in good health several of which are still active in their vocations. Several of them came over the sea to settle America and help build up the great country. All the ten men were of voting age when Abraham Lincoln was a candidate for president and several helped him in the struggle, during the dark days of the United States free to everybody.[sic] Following the life of each of the men pictured in the above. William Halverstadt - Was born July 28, 1843 *(Aug 23, 1843) in Salem Township. He entered the Civil War and fought under Capt. Abdiel Sturgeon of Co. H, 115th Regiment. On August 20, 1869 he married Miss Lucy Anglemyer and after her death was married again to Mrs. Phoebe Armstrong. It will be interesting to know that Mr. Halverstadt was taught by Aaron Overholt while attending school.
