Description	:	Cotton Haines, the son of John and Nancy (Norton) Haines was born in Greenland, N.H. on October 28, 1746. He was a ‘Soldiers in the Revolution'. He and Martha Nudd were married there circa 1765. They resided in Greenland for approximately fifteen years before removing to Rumney. From the Rumney Baptist Church Bulletin of August 17, 1980 we read: "Two hundred years ago this month, Elder Cotton Haines held Baptist meetings in the town of Rumney, beginning in August of 1780. The church was organized on March 4, 1799, with Rev. Ezra Wilmarth as the first pastor.... He and Martha Nudd were married there circa 1765. They resided in Greenland for approximately fifteen years before removing to Rumney. From the Rumney Baptist Church Bulletin of August 17, 1980 we read: "Two hundred years ago this month, Elder Cotton Haines held Baptist meetings in the town of Rumney, beginning in August of 1780. The church was organized on March 4, 1799, with Rev. Ezra Wilmarth as the first pastor. There was no meetinghouse in town, but private homes and barns were used for worship during much of the pastorate of Cotton Haines. In 1795 a church was erected on the lot now known as the Common. The town paid $1,200 towards the cost with the rest being paid for by individuals. The meeting house was built in the prevailing style of the period and was used for religious services and town meetings for nearly half a century, when it was moved and converted into a tannery. The first pastor of the newly organized church received by vote of the town a salary of 90 pounds per year - to be paid in grain and 1/3'd in money. This matter of payment savored somewhat of a union between church and state, and many were unhappy about the arrangement." Cotton died in Dorchester at the age of 76. His wife died two days later at 74. They were buried in the same grave at Rumney. However no stone can be found with their names. Cotton and Martha (Nudd) Haines are my 5th great-grandparents. Other than the 4 children shown on this page there are 8 others: •Cotton who was born in Greenland, N.H. September 16, 1796. He married Mary Hall. •James who was born in Greenland September 3, 1771. He married Betsey Willoughby who was born April 29, 1772. •Mary who was born July 19, 1773. She married Benjamin Hall. •Martha who was born in Greenland December 2, 1777 in Greenland. She married her cousin Matthias Haines. •Thomas who was born in Greenland February 14, 1779. He married 1st, Sally Fuller who died in May of 1813. He married 2nd Mrs. Sally Wheeler. •Elizabeth who was born in Rumney February 5, 1784 and died August 26, 1801. •Sarah who was born in Rumney June 4, 1787. She married Captain Benjamin Merrill who was born October 9, 1784 and died in 1835. They had 9 children. •Eleanor who was born in Rumney April 29, 1790. She married Rev. Joseph Merrill of Dracut, Mass. They had one daughter, Eleanor who married Isaac Silsbee of Boston.
