After graduating from Hawarden High School in 1946, Courtney enlisted in the U.S. Army. Soon everyone called him “Doc,” a nod to his doctor father and a nickname that would last a lifetime. Doc returned to Hawarden after almost two years as a Corporal in the U.S. Army, eighteen months of which serving with the First Calvary Division, Eighth Army in Nagai, Japan. Next up was becoming a “Hawkeye” at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, studying Journalism and Advertising from 1948 until graduation in 1952. After a short period with Safeway, Doc worked for Safeco Insurance from 1960 until his retirement in 1988. Doc married Jacqualyn Mary Harrison on June 9, 1951, in Hawarden, Iowa. The young couple moved west and welcomed sons, Courtney Jr. and Tristan. After daughter Heather arrived, the family settled in Arvada, Colorado in 1962, and son Grant soon joined the clan. Doc was a true Civil War and President Lincoln historian and participated in the Civil War Roundtable for many years with his wife Jackie at the University of Colorado, Boulder. A childhood trip to a Chicago Cubs’ game made Doc a lifelong baseball fan whose favorite teams were the Cubs and later, the Colorado Rockies. Doc was known for baking his own bread and rolls on cold, wintry days and for the holidays. Friends and family eagerly anticipated Doc’s announcement each year about whether he would be making his specialty: homemade holiday candy. Sunday evening suppers were often simply popcorn, apples and cheese. Doc’s house usually featured a pot of coffee easily at hand for neighbors and guests. Doc is remembered with love by his children: Tristan DeBruin, Heather Baker (Randy), Grant DeBruin (Linda), and daughter-in-law and widow of Courtney Jr., Martha DeBruin-Ryczek (Ted Ryczek); five grandchildren: Tara Gatseos (George), Janae Steward (Kevin), Evan Baker (Allysha), Jared and Margot DeBruin; and nine great-grandchildren: George IV, Gretta and John Gatseos; Leonie, Odin and Maris Steward; Penny, Hudson and Amund Baker. Doc is predeceased by wife Jackie (July 1997), son Courtney Jr. (March 1988), and sisters Anna (1997) and Leona (1980).
