ARTER SAW BITTER DAYS OF FIGHTING DURING LAST WEEKS OF WAR After months of tireless endeavor on the part of Miss Dora Arter to learn, if possible, something definite concerning what happened to Corporal Allan (Allen) Arter of the Rainbow Division, she has been rewarded. The communication received by Miss Arter on Tuesday with the valued information, was written by First Sergeant Fred G. Senften of the Adjutant’s office, at Le Mans, France, telling her not only of the valued services of her soldier brother to his country through bitter days of fighting in open warfare, for five months preceding his death, but of his fatal injury received by him on October 22nd at Verdun, when the heaviest fighting of the war was going on about him, and of his death in the Base hospital nearby on November 10th, just before the signing of the armistice and the order to “lay down arms”. The letter also states the location of the grave of the young soldier, in a little village in France. The following excerpts from the letter will be of much interest to the many friends of Allan Arter: “Through once source or another I learned that Alan Arter was wounded about twelve or sixteen days prior to the date of his death, on November 10th. That was during the battle of Verdun in which my outfits experienced some bitter days of fighting. As usual Corporal Arter was sent to the rear with the personnel detachment for the purpose of sending in the casualty reports, etc., and for the reason the reports were not sent back to the detachment as prompt and readily as they should have been, Arter was ordered to go to the front and determine the cause of the delay. It was during the time he was busy collecting these reports that the accident happened. As near as I have been able to determine he was with several men of the company near some rifle grenades when a shrapnel shell hit the grenades causing an explosion, and a large piece of shrapnel struck him in the abdomen in an area where he had been operated upon sometime before for appendicitis, I believe.” “The piece of the shrapnel penetrated the intestines, so I am told, making a very serious wound, so serious in fact that after being cared for in the Red Cross hospital about sixteen days, he passed away and was buried with military honors in the cemetery of the American Expeditionary Forces nearby. It is my intention to look up his grave just as soon as possible.” The letter contained a detailed statement of the services of Allan Arter to his country from the time he reached France with the Rainbow Division on October 31st, 1917, until he was called upon to make the Supreme Sacrifice. It told of months in the trenches, of his promotion to Corporal which came on May 1st, one year ago. His first battle of open warfare was at the battle of Chalons, Champagne front, from July 14th to the 18th, followed by the battle of Chateau Thierry, July 28th to August 10th, at St. Michiel, the letter states, remained in that sector until the later part of September when he went to Verdun. The trips to and from the various fronts which he visited were for the most part made on foot, Sergt. Senften states, and several thousand kilometers were covered by him in this manner. The splendid record of Allan Arter as a soldier during his entire term of service, and especially of the months immediately preceding his death, cannot but be a matter of pride to all who deplore his death, coming as it did just when the victory he had fought so valiantly to win was in sight.
