Craddock New Yorker Attached To Local Soldier's Outfit Visits Widow A soldier friend of the late Cpl. Elmer Craddock, who was killed while fighting the Japanese on le Shima last year, visited Craddock's widow and his mother recently. He is Frank Mercorelli, of 178 West Houston street, New York, who was a member of the famed 77th Division in which Craddock served. Mercorelli said that he worked in the communications center at headquarters and received the message of Craddock's death while on duty. According to the New Yorker there are two stories of how the Cumberland soldier met his death. One is that the truck in which the bomb disposal squad of which he was a member ran over a land mine and the truck destroyed. The other is that Craddock and several members of the squad were killed while de-fusing a 500 pound bomb. Craddock fought with the 77th Division, composed mostly of New York men, on Guam, Leyte, Okinawa and le Shima. He won the Bronze Star medal for bravery in rendering a Japanese ammunition dump harmless during the battle near Ormac on Leyte. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Irene (Brown) Craddock, 432 Williams street, and his mother Mrs. M. J. Craddock, 603 Louisiana avenue. ---- T/5 CPL Elmer Jospeh Craddock, CPT George Clifford “Clifford” Sarauw, 2LT Arthur J. Zellmer, and T/SGT Francis H. Zurn were killed, and T/5 CPL Raymond J. Rondeau and presumed killed on 18 April 1945. They were assigned to 92nd Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad (Separate), attached to the 77th Infantry Division. The 92nd Ordnance Bomb Disposal Squad (Separate) had been patrolling for Japanese’s mines southwestern part of Ie Jima (also called Ie Shima), Okinawa, where these obstacles had been thickest The mines were discouraging Navy supply craft from landing. The squad drove their ¾-ton truck passed Assistant Division Commander BG Edwin Hubert Randle's command post and stopped on the beach 300 yards from it. The Japanese had placed aircraft 100-pound bombs buried nose-up on the beach and road as mines. The squad had dug up the bombs earlier. The squad was last seen loading the bombs up into their truck when the explosion occurred. The truck was blown 50 yards off the road. BG Randle was one of the first persons on the scene. One member of the squad was hospitalized and survived, but did not know what happen. T/5 CPL Craddock was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with V Device and the Purple Heart Medal posthumously.
