June 12th. Company remained in this position until about 5 o'clock p.m. at which time Company was ordered out to reinforce Marines on the front line. In order to do this it was necessary to pass through a very heavy barrage fire, with which a great deal of Mustard Gas was mixed. During this movement Capt. [Jesse Lowen] of Company was killed, and about four men [five]. One officer and about twenty men wounded. Quite a number of men were overcome by gas and could not proceed. Out of entire Company, one hundred and eighty five strong, only about fifty men under Lieut. Barrons arrived at their objective. The remainder of Company that could proceed were lost in woods, not being able to travel through thick woods and underbrush in gas masks. These later found their way back to original position where they were used as litter bearers and carrying parties for rations, at which they gave invaluable service. Part of Company that reached front immediately took up position along north edge of woods, facing open field. Shortly after arrival part of these men assisted by a few Marines succeeded in capturing or killing about thirty Germans who had barricaded themselves along ditches at road side. A short time after this detachment was reinforced on left by 45th Co. Fifth Marines. About 8:00 P.M. Patrolling party from these men acted in conjunction with patrolling party of 45th Co. Marines to drive out enemy machine guns that had succeeded in getting around behind our lines. In this we were successful, using hand grenades and V.B's. Remainder of night fairly quiet.
June 13th. At day break our position shelled by heavy artillery for about fifteen minutes. Remainder of day quiet except for machine gun action. On the night of the 13th position shelled by trench mortars.
