His parents were Lewis Jackson Wheelock and Mary Elizabeth Westphall. In 1895 they migrated to Iowa by covered wagon and settled near Quimby. Riley spent the entire remainder of his life in the Quimby vicinity, practicing the barber trade for the past 40 years. Wheelock, World War I, Veteran, Iowa, CPL CAS DET 942 DEMOB GP, born Aug. 29, 1888, died April 16, 1953. ----------- George Alfred Wheelock, better known as Riley, was born August 29, 1888 in Stockton, Ill. His parents were Lewis Jackson Wheelock and Mary Elizabeth Westphall. In 1895 they migrated to Iowa by covered wagon and settled near Quimby. Riley spent the entire remainder of his life in the Quimby vicinity, practicing the barber trade for the past 40 years. He served in the army in World War I, overseas in the 7th Division of L Company, from May 13, 1918 to July 5, 1919. He attained the rank of Corporal. On July 5, 1920, he was united in marriaged to Hazel Morgan Hammond. To this union two daughters were born, Shirley (Mrs. Walter Hempel) of Quimby and Zelda (Mrs. Walter Pechota) of Waterloo. There is a stepson, Cecil Hammond of Pierson. Other than his wife and children he is survived by 15 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Charles Herring of Sioux City, also a host of other relatives and friends. A prayer service was held at the Walter Hemple farm home on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Methodist church in Quimby at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Rosco C. Jerrell was in charge of the service. Mrs. Laurence Bloomquist sang two numbers accompanied by Mrs. Perry Gano. Burial was in Quimby cemetery under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home and with the American Legion giving the Military honors. Pall bearers were Germ Cantine, Paul Campbell, Earl Hansen, Ray Hollingshead and A. D. Marlin. Cherokee Courier, Cherokee, IA, Apr 23, 1953
