ROCKWELL: Funeral Services for Cpl George F Antonitis, 24, a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, who died in Vietnam Dec 3, will he conducted Wednesday at 3pm at Providence Methodist Church by the U.S. Army Chaplain in charge who will be assisted by the Rev. Luther Bullard, pastor of Enon Baptist Church. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The body will be moved to the home on Route 4. Salisbury, Poole Road, today at 4pm. and placed in the church 30 minutes before the services. He was born Jan 21, 1942, in Washington, D.C., son of Anthony J Antonitis and the late Edith Myers Antonitis. He attended Woodleaf schools and was formerly employed by Combined Insurance Company. For a time he operated Union Stop and Shop Grocery on Bringle Ferry Road. He entered the military service in August of 1966 and went to Vietnam in June of 1967. Survivors include his wife, Ann Wise to whom he was married Dec 6, 1964; two sons, Cecil Franklin and Jeffery Allen Antonitis of Route 1, Cleveland: his father and step-mother, Mr and Mrs A.J. Antonitis of Wilkes Barre, Pa.; his maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs C.F. Myers of Route l, Salisbury with whom he lived for many years; his paternal grandmother, Mrs Anna Antonitis of Inkerman, Pa ; a step brother, Anthony Antonitis of Wilkes Barre, Pa.; and a step sister, Caroline Antonitis, of Wilkes Barre, Pa. CPL George Antonitis was a member of my platoon while I was assigned as Platoon Sergeant, 188th Military Police Company during 1967. I remember George for his big smile he always had for everyone. He was a dedicated soldier, loving husband and a friend to all those he came into contact with. One evening during the summer of 1967, George and a few others from my platoon and myself, went to downtown Saigon to enjoy a relaxing time away from the 12 hour shifts we worked every day, 7 days per week. I became well acquainted with George, and was extremely proud and honored to have this great man in my unit. He was looking forward going on R&R to Hawaii and meeting his wife for a 5 day vacation. George was informed that he was being assigned to a ammunition barge site for security duty, which required him to relocate some miles from our company headquarters. He asked me to plead his case to the Company Commander to allow him to remain at his present assignment. I did so, however I lost my request, and George was sent to the barge site. A short time later I was transferred to another unit into a higher job position. On 3 Dec 67, George was inspecting a barge, which had been tampered with the previous night. As he jumped from one barge to another, he slipped and fell into the river below. His fellow MP tried unsuccessfully to rescue George, and his body was recovered a few days later. I was heartbroken when I heard of his death, and I still feel his loss 36 years later. George was a great American, and I'm sure his is still wearing that big smile in heaven. George was a loving husband, father and a true friend. With his passing has created a deep void in all the lives he has touched. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Time is supposed to be the healer of everything, but I can say that has not been the case with me. This world has lost a true friend and wonderful person, in George Antonitis. Cpl George Franklin Antonitis, 23, died on Sunday of drowning. Details of the death, reportedly from non-hostile causes, are still not known. Cpl Antonitis was the 10th local military man to lose his life in the Vietnam Conflict. The Soldier's family was notified Sunday that he was missing and received official word yesterday of his death. Cpl Antonitis was scheduled to be given a seven-day leave from Vietnam on the day of his death and his wife, who lives here, had planned to leave Sunday to be with him. The word that he was missing came only hours before she was to leave. The scheduled leave from Vietnam was a result of his serving six months in combat. The plane ticket to his wife last week so she could be with him for his leave in Hawaii, following which he had six more months of Vietnam duty scheduled. The victim was married to the former Ann Wise of Route #4 Salisbury. Mrs Antonitis is the daughter of Mrs J.G. Pickler and the late R.L. Wise. Cpl Antonitis was the son Anthony Antonitis of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, but had lived in Rowan County since he was a child. He was the grandson of Mr and Mrs C.F. Myers of Route #1 Salisbury, and had lived with his Grandparents throughout his high school years. He attended Woodleaf Schools and was formerly employed by Combined Insurance Company and for a time operated Union Stop and Shop Grocery on Bringle Perry Road. Cpl Antonitis entered the military service in August 1966. He was married and is survived by two children from his first marriage. Cpl Antonitis was the author of a Post letter to the editor last month in which he expressed his feelings on the antiwar protestors and on the support he had received from the people at home. It was ironic that the wrote that the protestors were responsible for the deaths of American soldiers. The letter came a month and two days before he died. "All this protesting makes one stop and think,: he wrote. "The protestors are the cause for a lot of American Soldiers getting killed over here. If support helps a man's morale, protesting hurts him. If morale is high we can work better and there's nothing to stop us from obtaining our mission or goal. If it's low, it's not only harder for us to do our job but also easier for the enemy". "This was is going to be a long war. If we had the support of everyone, including the protesters. I believe the war against Communism would be shortened by quite a few years." Cpl Antonitis in his letter, thanked a fifth-grade class from Granite Quarry School for a letter of support which he received. "I don't know any of those children," he wrote, "but after receiving more letters from the children and their teacher today, I feel I've known them all for a long time. It's what they've done that is the best morale builder we have". That latter was sent to Cpl Antonitis from the class of Mrs Jean Lefler of Granite School. Individual members of Mrs Lefler's class also sent him letters and he had established a pen pal relationship with the youngsters, and had written many of them personal messages. The class had sent him Christmas Candy and cookies. It is not known if the gifts reached him before his death. Cpl Antonitis had promised to visit the school class as soon as he reached home. He was awarded The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal and The National Defense Service Medal.
