As a member of the Army, CPL Hardy served our country until June 11th,1969 in Pleiku, South Vietnam. He was 18 years old and was not married. It was reported that Phillip died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. Phillip was born on September 29th, 1950 in Mount Olive, North Carolina. He died never to know cell phones, computers, email or fax machines. I remember him as full of life. He and his sargent, Charles Farmer died at the same time from the same attack. Were they heros? At minimum, very brave men that did not run when their country called them. For those of us that lived, we have carried the sadness of losing our companions for almost 35 years. That night, most of us were wounded. The scars are long gone, but the scars on my heart will never go away. In the military, everyone was known by their last name, I know that few even knew my first name. I remember him on January 31st. That was a day that my closest friend was killed and also the first American I saw killed. I also remember him on June 12th. That was the day he and Sgt Farmer were killed and I was wounded. My son has a birthday on June 5th...somehow that softens the memory. The third day I remember is memorial day. My favorite memory was watching Hardy play poker. He played with passion when he was winning and even more passion when he was losing. I also remember sitting on guard with him as he told me he wanted to be a hero for his girlfriend. We called him (J.W.)John Wayne Hardy because he was very aggressive and loved to shoot his M-16 from the hip when we were under attack. We would all have our heads down shooting like crazy and he would be standing up with bullets whizzing around. The night he was killed was so full of action, no one saw him hit. From the wounds he received, he died fast. That night our country lost two very brave men and tomorrow I will remember them. I am now 59 and my hair is gray. I have children and grandchildren. Life has gone on for me but the memories will be with me for as long as I live. After that, in heaven I suspect there is no place for sad memories. This year is especially painful as I have now lost another friend. Hartwell was the track commander on my vehicle. He was the guy that played poker with Hardy and usually beat him. He was a leader and we stood side by side many times and fought for our lives. He was also wounded on the night Hardy was killed. Hartwell left the military and became a Policeman in Boston. He retired and was emailing me regularly the last few years. September he stopped emailing. According to the email I got from his wife, he went into his basement where he died. It took 37 years for him to die from the emotional wounds of Vietnam. You will never see his name on the wall but the war killed him just the same.
