Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa. Robert Lou Pepin was born on May 25, 1917 at Oelwein, Iowa, the fourth of seven children born to Lawrence E.M. & Myrtle V. (Higgins) Pepin. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1937. Robert was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving as a Corporal in Company "L" of the 168th Infantry Regimental Combat Team, 34th (Red Bull) Division. His unit landed at Algiers, North Africa on November 7, 1942. The 168th RCT participated in the Battle of Kasserine Pass, Tunisia against the forces of General Rommel – "The Desert Fox', where Robert was captured on February 18, 1943. He was transported as a Prisoner of War to Stalag 7A – Moosberg POW camp, then to Stalag 3B – Furstenburg, and finally walked to Stalag 3A – Luckenwalde in February of 1945. Luckenwalde POW Camp was liberated by the Red Army April 22, 1945. Robert was united in marriage to Helen Virginia Gremmels on November 10, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church at Oelwein, Iowa. He began his career with John Deere Waterloo Works in 1941, taking time out for his military service, then resuming as a UAW Electrician until retiring in 1980 with 39 years of service. Robert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9, The state chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War and United Auto Workers Union Local #838 of Waterloo. Bob is survived by his: Daughter: Diane (Edwin) Steffen of Hudson; 2 Sons: Terry (Beverly) Pepin of Oelwein & Denny (Marcia) Pepin of Oelwein; Daughter-In-Law: Marj Pepin of Center Point, 7 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandchildren; 2 Sisters: Barbara Glaw of Waterloo & Marian (Elmo) Boone of Woodland, California; Brother: George Pepin of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Brother-In-Law: Rev. Robert Gremmels (Rev. Beth Olson) and several Nieces & Nephews. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife: Helen on January 25, 2001, Son: Robert Lee on July 30, 2001, Sister: Dorothy Hoffman, 2 Brothers: Frank & Donald Pepin and a grandson: Chip.
