Read More	Killed in Action WW2 Okinawa 1st Marine Division Summit, South Dakota Grant County September 21, 1925 – April 30, 1945 Killed in Action at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands Rosswell Rolando Halse was born September 21, 1925, at Summit, Grant County, South Dakota, to Roland and Gertina Halse. Rosswell started school at Wallace, South Dakota, but then moved with his family to Marvin. He attended Osceola #4 for his primary grades, completed his freshman year at South Shore, and graduated from Summit High School in 1943. Rosswell enlisted in the Marine Corps and entered active service on November 13, 1943, when he was eighteen. After completing his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Rosswell was immediately shipped overseas on April 20, 1944, to the Pacific theater. Corporal Halse participated in the battle for the Pelelieu Islands. In the Rapid City Journal in February of 1945, Corp. Halse had been reported as killed in action on September 21, 1944, in the invasion of Palau. The Navy then retracted that report as an error. On April 30, 1945, Corporal Rosswell Halse was killed by shrapnel on Okinawa. Although he was originally buried on Ryukyu Islands, his remains were returned to the United States after the war and he is buried at St. Pauli Cemetery in Wallace. Rosswell Halse was only 19 years old. His commander wrote to the family: "Rosswell was with us many months and was very popular in the company. He always did his job and at all times was a credit to the Marine Corps and his country." He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
