At 0:600H a platoon enroute to check a suspected enemy rocket launching site northeast of Hill 22 in Hieu Duc District near the vicinity of La Chau, became engaged with an enemy force. The NVA, in hidden positions opened fire on the Marines with automatic weapons and rifle fire inflicting several casualties on the platoon. Artillery and air support were brought to bear on the fortified enemy positions, after the prep fires were conducted the Marines moved forward on the attack. At the conclusion of the engagement, two NVA soldiers were taken prisoner, with one was later was identified as the CO (Commanding Officer) of the 141st NVA Regiment. One of the casualties during the fire fight was Cpl Eklofe who was killed in action as a result of hostile automatic weapons fire. * PFC Samuel A. Eklofe was presented with the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" "For heroic achievement ....on 5 May 1968...." Casualties: Samuel Alvin Eklofe Roosevelt Johnson Jr. "Published in the local Newspaper" Cpl Samuel A. Eklofe, West Chester Marine, Loses Life in Vietnam Cpl. Samuel A. Eklofe, a young Marine from the West Chester community who had returned to Vietnam only a few days earlier, was killed by rifle fire from a sniper on February 25, 1969. Word of his death was relayed to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Eklofe of Rt. 2 Keota, during the week-end. Cpl. Eklofe had completed a tour of duty in Vietnam and has spent his leave at home. He had just returned to Vietnam and his death occurred about nine miles from Da Nang. Mr. and Mrs. Eklofe farm near West Chester and are employed by Keith Statler where the family has lived the past five years. The home is located one mile south and six and one-half miles east of Keota. During his first tour of duty Cpl. Eklofe earned the Bronze Star among other decorations. He was reared in the Fremont area and in addition to his parents he is survived by 19 brothers and sisters. Funeral services are pending until the arrival of his body in this country.
