A family prayer service will be 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church Vernon was born July 28, 1921, in the Kingsley, Iowa, area, to Ray and Emma (Woods) Bainbridge. He attended school in Kingsley, where he graduated in 1939. He sheared a lot of sheep in his younger years in Cherokee County. His family did custom baling. He showed a sixth place calf at the International Cattle Show in Chicago as a young man in 4-H. He was married to Mildred Ferris on Jan. 7, 1947, at Elk Point, S.D. He farmed for many years until retiring due to poor eyesight and moved to Kingsley. He also loaded lots of gravel out of his own gravel pit north of Quimby, Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and five battlefield stars. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the V.F.W. and at one time several square dance clubs. He enjoyed square dancing, bowling with his son Rodney, fishing in Minnesota and playing cards. He had lived in Cherokee for many years, prior to this on a farm near Quimby, Iowa. Vernon loved his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and had many friends. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; three children, Rodney Bainbridge and his wife, Priscilla of Cherokee, Roger "Scrapper" Bainbridge and his wife, Bonnie of Cherokee, and Beth Mote and her husband, Tom of Dupo, Ill.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Beulah Spink of Kingsley, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judy Law; great-grandson, Jerry Mote; brother, Doris Ray Bainbridge; and a sister, Lainys Bainbridge.
