The schooner, the Mary D. Cramer, bound for Philadelphia, had a disabled rudder and was flying a distress flag when spotted. A heavy gale had sprung up off the coast of Florida and traveled up to New York causing very rough seas. In the words of Captain Kembel of the Knickerbocker - "We were asked to tow her to port. It was a terrible heavy sea and the waves were dashing up over the schooner's deck. Our own ship was rocking back and forth, and it was almost impossible for anyone to keep on his feet. The wind from the coast was blowing a perfect hurricane, and it seemed like madness almost for anyone to risk a rescue in such a storm. First officer Captain Bartholomew J. Henry and four of the crew, William Legerton, John Johnson, George Harris and Frederick Johnson, volunteered to take the lifeboat and go to the rescue. The lifeboat, which was a new one of the most improved pattern, was prepared, and with the men in it, during a lull in the gale, was lowered into the sea. The schooner was reached in safety and the first officer went on board. After a short consultation, Captain Henry returned to the boat and the men started back towards the steamer with a cable, which was then attached to the schooner. About this time the gale increased and the lifeboat could only be run at short intervals. When half way between the schooner and the steamer, the lifeboat capsized and two men were washed into the sea. In a few minutes the lifeboat righted, the cable was lost, and those remaining commenced to pull for the steamer for dear life. The lifeboat was within a short distance of the steamer when she again capsized and the brave fellows were all lost. In a few minutes the wind changed and a boat was sent out after the lifeboat, which was floating bottom upwards, 100 yards from the steamer. As the lifeboat was reached, Capt. Bartholomew Henry's body was found floating by its side, strapped to one of the boats. The officer had undoubtedly tied a rope about his waist to prevent himself from being washed overboard. While the men were lifting the body into the boat the lifeboat was carried away by a heavy sea and dashed to pieces against the side of the steamer. The body was taken on board, and in a short time the gale decreased. As the schooner Mary D. Cramer was in no danger of sinking or being washed ashore, we left her. It would have been impossible for us to have towed her into Philadelphia, as we were bound for New York, except it had been a case of necessity.
