Description	:	During the Revolutionary War David Reed was appointed a lieutenant, under Captain Actor Patten, at the Penobscot expedition and Bagaduce. During his military career, he rose to the rank of captain,and served on the Committee of Correspondence and Safety in 1776, '81, and '83. During this time he discovered the area around the Penobscot River to the north where he later moved the family. During this time he discovered the area around the Penobscot River to the north where he later moved the family. In the early 1790's David and and Diantha Rogers Reed moved to the Orono area and soon changed their last name to Read. In 1793 Captain Read built the second sawmill in town on the south side of the Stillwater River. This area was called "Read's Point". This mill was rebuilt about 1817 and called the "Stone Mill." David died in Orono between 1808 when he signed a deed and the 1810 census. He was about 71 years old. Diantha (nicknamed) Nancy remained at the Main Street house with her sons David and John and died in Orono Oct. 26, 1815 at age 74. Both David and Diantha were probably buried in the Old Cemetery which was located between the lower end of Water and Pine Streets in the area where the railroad tracks are now located. No record exists of the complete list of burials in the Old Cemetery. When the railroad was being built, their bodies were probably moved to Riverside cemetery but the condition of some of the bodies made removal impossible. There is no marker for either burial.
