Description	:	The son of James Cooper Lackland and Matilda Crabb, Eli was born when the family lived in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was baptized at Prince George Parish in Montgomery County on New Year's Day 1829. The Lacklands made their way to eastern Missouri in the fall of 1833, when Eli was 6-years-old. They settled first in Florissant, Missouri in what would eventually be part of St. Louis County, but moved to nearby St. Charles County, Missouri in 1835. Read More	The son of James Cooper Lackland and Matilda Crabb, Eli was born when the family lived in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was baptized at Prince George Parish in Montgomery County on New Year's Day 1829. The Lacklands made their way to eastern Missouri in the fall of 1833, when Eli was 6-years-old. They settled first in Florissant, Missouri in what would eventually be part of St. Louis County, but moved to nearby St. Charles County, Missouri in 1835. Eli's father was in the sawmill business there. Eli's brother, Henry Lackland, became a successful attorney and college professor in St. Charles County. Eli, his parents, and a few of his surviving siblings lived with Henry and his family for a number of years. Henry's homes served as Eli's primary residence for much of his life. He never married. Before the Civil War, Eli worked as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. His adventures during those days led to him cross paths and become friends with Samuel Clemens, who later became famous under the penname of Mark Twain. Eli went on to other jobs, but forever considered himself a riverman. In 1870, he worked as a merchant and lived with his older brother, Augustus in St. Charles. By 1876, Eli was the chief clerk of the Scotia Iron Mines in Crawford County, Missouri. He lived in St. Charles, again with his brother, Henry, by the time the 1880 census was taken. While staying in the Pilgrim Hotel in St. Louis in 1897, Eli died of what his Missouri death certificate described as "valvular disease of the heart" at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 6 days. Lackland, who was a steamboatsman in the palmy days of the Mississippi, died at the Pilgrim Hotel in St. Louis Tuesday afternoon at the age of 75 [sic]. Mr. Lackland was a friend of Mark Twain when the author was a pilot on the river. He was full of the tales of the old glories of the river and was an entertaining companion. He was a brother of C. M. Lackland, of this city, who went to St. Louis yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral service. (Mexico Weekly Ledger [Mexico, Missouri]; 08 Jul 1897; p. 4) ---------- BURIAL PERMITS.
