In memory of Dick, memorials can be directed to Warriors Never Give Up, Sioux Falls. Dick Ambrosius was born on April 25, 1946 in Huron, South Dakota to Norm and Lillian Ambrosius. He was the middle child following his beloved big brother Buck and little sister, Nancy Sieh. Dick graduated from Huron High School in 1964 and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where he was involved in ROTC, the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and earned a Master's Degree. Years later he would successfully lobby to bring the ATO chapter back to Greek Life at the USD campus. After his college graduation in 1968, he was commissioned to the US Army and earned the rank of Captain. He served in Vietnam where he was injured in combat and subsequently earned Purple Heart and Bronze Star honors. Dick was an extremely hard worker and did everything 110%. He started a new Senior Citizen Center and founded his own marketing firm, Phoenix Systems which evolved into the consulting practice Positive Aging. A tireless advocate for Seniors' rights, he cofounded "The Society", a group of thought leaders who work to explore various topics related to aging. He was a private investigator, a probation officer and even a published author. He has done SO much for SO many, and has worn so many hats. He was a patriot and an honorable man in all he did. Even in "retirement" he served as Executive Director for Warriors Never Give Up - a local non-profit organization that provides outdoor adventures to disabled veterans. He was a devoted and loyal friend. He loved the Black Hills. A man of his word, you could always trust a handshake. You could say a hundred things about him and not scratch the surface of who he was. Anyone who knew him would tell you Dick did everything whole heartedly. He worked hard, but more importantly he loved hard. He truly gave the BEST hugs. Ask anyone around who had the honor. He was a loving husband to his wife, Karen; a supportive father to his children, Jennifer, Matthew and Jacob, a caring big brother to his little sister Nancy, and absolutely adored his five grandchildren - Taylor, Cody, Willa, Norah Jane and Ty Richard. He was a fun cousin, a favorite uncle and his presence in the family will be greatly missed. Dick passed away early on January 24th after suffering a severe brain bleed the previous Tuesday. He was a fighter to end but died peacefully with his wife by his side. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Karen Ambrosius of Sioux Falls; daughter, Jennifer Petersen and her husband, Brent of Tea, SD; son, Matt Ambrosius and his wife, Jess of St. Augustine, FL; son, Jacob Ambrosius who is currently serving in the United States Navy; grandchildren, Taylor Rupe, Cody Petersen, Willa Ambrosius, Norah Ambrosius, Ty Petersen; sister, Nancy Sieh of Katy, TX; and a host of additional relatives and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Norm and Lillian (McGaughey) Ambrosius; brother, Buck Ambrosius.
