James Albert Kummings, 24, son of the late Lester R. Kummings and Viola Fix Kummings of Williamsport, was killed in action June 4, 1969, in Vietnam, according to word received from the U.S. Army Saturday evening. According to reports, he was flying a reconnaisance airplane in combat when he was killed. Lt. Kummings was born in Williamsport, and attended Longlois Grade School (in Lafayette). He graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1963, and attended Purdue University from August 1963 to January 1966, where he majored in mechanical engineering. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1966 and underwent basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. In November 1966 he was selected for Officers Candidate School, and received his commission in June 1967, after going through Artillery School at the Missile Center at Ft. Sill, OK. In October 1968, he was selected for the Fixed-Wing Aircraft Aviators' Course and graduated in December 1968. He married Paula Gordon Bahler on Dec. 31, 1968, and left for overseas duty Jan. 6, 1969. [She is now Paula Winder of Lafayette, IN.] Surviving with his mother and widow are two sisters, Karen Louise and Sherryl Ann Kummings, both at home in Williamsport. His father, Lester R. Kummings, was assistant foreman of the composing room at the Lafayette "Journal and Courier" newspaper, who died Aug. 28, 1968. --Lafayette Journal & Courier - Mon 6/9/1969, page 6 ========== KUMMINGS - Final rites for Capt. James A. Kummings of Lafayette, who was killed in Vietnam June 4 [1969] will be held Monday [June 16, 1969]. He was awarded the rank of captain posthumously by the U.S. Army. A graduate of West Lafayette High School, he died while flying a reconnaissance airplane on a spotting mission. He was the husband of Mrs. Paula (Bahler) Kummings of Lafayette, and the son of Mrs. Viola Kummings of Williamsport and the late Lester R. Kummings. Friends may call at Hippensteel Funeral Home from 6-9 PM Sunday. Services at First Baptist Church at 1:30 PM Monday, the Rev. Dr. Randall Corkern officiating.
