Description	:	John Garrelt Duit was born at West Rhauderfehn, Germany in Ostfriesland. He was born on Feb. 19, 1842 to Carl Garrelt and Antje Duit. He lived at home attending common school in the village. At the afe of 14 he left home to become a sailor boy. At the afe of 16 he was confirmed in the Christian faith. He resumed his occupation as a sailor until the age of 18 when he entered a navigation school at Leer Oldenberg, Germany After completing school he worked at the ship yards in Edem, Germany. He also sailed for several years. Johann... Read More	John Garrelt Duit was born at West Rhauderfehn, Germany in Ostfriesland. He was born on Feb. 19, 1842 to Carl Garrelt and Antje Duit. He lived at home attending common school in the village. At the afe of 14 he left home to become a sailor boy. At the afe of 16 he was confirmed in the Christian faith. He resumed his occupation as a sailor until the age of 18 when he entered a navigation school at Leer Oldenberg, Germany After completing school he worked at the ship yards in Edem, Germany. He also sailed for several years. Johann then attended a school at Aurich for the purpose of securing a captaincy. Having acuired his diploma as a captain, he sailed the seas in that capacity for twelve years. Acquiring 2 freighter ships of his own which brought him into practically all parts of the globe. He followed his trade for 27 years. His ships were named Sarah and Margareta, which was wrecked on a sand bar near Madigascar which is an island off S. E. coast of Africa. Johann lived with a priest for 6 months following the shipwreck. Johann married Eliza Jajanette Grothaus of Holte, Germany on June 27, 1875 in West Rhauderfehn. It was a church wedding. Johann had courted Elisa for 11 years. Due to his sailing, letters were few and far between. Eliza sailed with Johann for 7 years after their marriage. Garrelt their first child was born December 4, 1876 and Carl Johann the second child was born November 1, 1878. They were born in West Rhauderfehn, Germany. Johann and Eliza's first son, Garralt, died in 1894 of _________. He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Grant Township, Franklin County, IA. Carl Johann, the second child born in Germany, married Elizabeth Brass and lived in Grant Township all of his life. Give children were born to Carl and Elizabeth: John, Aeilt, Jajanetta, Alvin, and Alice. Carl died in February 22, 1938 and is buried in St. Peter's Cemetery near Geneva, IA. Johann and Eliza moved to U.S.A. settling in Galveston, Texas where their 3rd child, Anton (first born of the name), was born on February 22, 1880. He died at Galveston, Texas July 4, 1882. Elisa and the two sons Garrelt and Carl were living in Galveston as the 2 boys were in school. Father Johann, who was sailing at the time of Anton's birth, never saw baby Anton. This grieved him so much that he decided to sell his one remaining ship, the other was lost at sea.Johann and Eliza moved to a farm near Bradford, IA in Franklin Co. Later he bought a 160 acre farm where he and his family settled for their remaining years. Later he bought another farm of 160 acres north and west of the home place. Tjodie (first born of the name) was born on the farm on January 11, 1883 and died on the farm September 25, 1892 at the age of 9. She died of appendicitis and inflamation of the bowls. Anton (second of the name) was born February 27, 1885 on the farm. He was born and raised in that area. He married a neighbor girl. O'tillie Heinz. Anton and Tillie had five children: Harry, Garrelt, Lavern, Hilda, and Cleva. Anton had bought the farm he lived on from his father Johann. Anton died on March 10, 1941 at home. He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Grant Township in Franklin County on the hill south of the farm. Antje (Anna) was born June 15, 1889. Anna moved to Ackley, IA where she lived with her father Johann after her mother died in 1905. Anna was first married to Frank Weaver who died in 1917. Her second marriage was to Fred Siebold. Gred died in 1958 and is buried in the Ackley Cemetery. Fred and Anna had a daughter Joan who lives in Bradley, Ill. Antja died June 6, 1976 and is buried in the Ackley Cemetery.Johann and Eliza's seventh child Tjodie (second of the name) was born at the home farm July 23, 1892. She married John Ubben and they moved to South Dakota. They spent most of their years in Presho, South Dakota. Tjodie and John had four children: John, Dean, Annetta, and Sylvia.
