Read More	Gering and the entire community mourn the untimely death of Lewis E. Cottle, who passed away suddenly about 4 o’clock Thursday morning at his home in this city. He had been in apparently excellent health, in fact, had not been ill so much as a day during the past ten or fifteen years. He had complained slightly of indigestion occasionally during the past week, but no alarm was felt. Mrs. Cottle was awakened by a noise in the bathroom, and upon arising found the body lying upon the floor. It appeared that death had been instantaneous, although a gash was cut in his temple where his head struck the edge of the bathtub. A possibility that his fall was accidental, and that death ensued following and as a result of the shock, was being given consideration yesterday, and an autopsy was to be had to determine the fact. Mr. Cottle came to Gering about fifteen years ago, not long after terminating his service in the world war, having been a captain in France. He was also a Spanish-American War Veteran. Upon arriving here, he began the practice of law and rapidly acquired a fine personal and professional standing, as well as taking active part in many civic and social phases of community life. Probably the most outstanding service he rendered her was in the kindred lines of veteran relief and charitable work, never hesitating to give effective service to veterans of the national armies and carrying more Red Cross and general relief work perhaps than anyone in the valley. His own army service probably accounted for his intense patriotism in a degree, but he was kindly and public spirited as well as and held universal respect among the ranks of business and social circles aside from the phases mentioned. The deceased was a member of the official board of the Methodist Church, a Mason in the blue lodge and Royal Arch Chapter; American Legion; Spanish War Veterans and V.F.W. He was prominent in the organization and for a time commander of the local National Guard Company. Lewis E. Cottle was born in Illinois, November 11, 1873, almost sixty-one years ago. At the age of eight, his family located in Clay County, Nebraska. He graduated from the state university and the Nebraska law school and practiced his profession at Edgar for a number of years, and during that period, wedded Miss Daisy Williams of Geneva, who survives him. He is also survived by a brother, C. G. Cottle of Edgar, Neb., and a sister, Lillian Williams, teacher in a government Indian school in Oklahoma. A brother, Harve Cottle, died two years ago in Texas, where he was instructor in a teachers college. The funeral service is to be held this morning at 10:30 from the Methodist Church in Gering, with Rev. M. W. Rose in Charge. The Gering Courier, September 8th, 1934 The final rites were held at Geneva Saturday afternoon. Rev. T. S. Hughes, pastor of the Edgar Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased had always been a member until his removal to Gering, conducted a short service at the Hrubesky Mortuary at 1:30. Interment in the Geneva Cemetery followed. The Masonic ritualistic service was carried out at the grave by about twenty members of the Edgar Masonic lodge, in which the deceased had continued his membership. Geneva Masons joined in the service also. Two members of the National Guard, Melvin Flick and Gene Edgar, and two members of the Gering American Legion post, Mr. Walters and Lester Laughlin, accompanied the body of Captain Cottle to Geneva as a guard of honor. Mrs. Cottle was accompanied to Geneva by her brother, John M. Williams of Denver. Among those coming to Geneva for the funeral service were Mrs. Ethelyn Beals and son Joe and son-in-law, George Ball, and Mrs. Merrill, wife of Oscar Merrill, uncle of Mrs. Cottle, all of Kansas City; Charles Cottle, brother of Captain Cottle and his wife; Garry Walley and wife, schoolmates of Captain Cottle, all of Edgar; Howard Cottle, nephew and wife of Omaha; Mrs. Lillian Williams of Concho, Ok., Sister of Captain Cottle; Mrs. Welcome Shivey McAvoy and husband, Maurice McAvoy, of Campbell, Neb. Other relatives attending were Mrs. John Shively and William Merrill of Geneva, cousins of Mrs. Cottle. A group of members of the Geneva P.E.O. Chapter attended the funeral services.
