Dexter departed this life on the evening of the 8th, in the 79th year of his age, after a few days illness of pneumonia and pleurisy. A few weeks since he was confined to his house for a few days from a cold, but his many friends were pleased to see him about the streets and able to attend his usual vocations again. Wednesday forenoon he was at his office, and cast his vote for the National Union Ticket. Returning home he complained of not feeling well and took his bed, which proved to be his bed of death. Captain Dexter was born in Grafton, Mass and came to this place in September 1799 in consequence of his father's removal here. He was early employed as a clerk, and about 1807 or 8 he removed, and was employed in that capacity for several years at Slaterville. Returning to this place again, he was engaged with his brother in a store. About the year 1829 he commenced manufacturing stocking yarn, and has been in the manufacturing business since, accumulating a handsome property, and contributing one of the largest and finest Mills to that branch of our industry. He commenced erecting a brick block last fall, on Main Street, which bears his name, and for style of architecture and durable material, surpasses anything of the kind in our village. He engaged in this work as he did everything he undertook, as in the full vigor of youth; and though failing to see it completed, it had sufficiently progressed to make him satisfied that he had contributed to the list a building which would do no discredit to those around. The title of "Captain" he received while in command of a company of State militia during the war of 1812; and an informant speaks of the time when he called his company out, and asking for volunteers, none responding, three men were drafted. He had been a member of the Town Council, and held other town offices, and had been a member of the Fire Ward since 1824, until within a few years past. He was a member of the First Sabbath School (being the founder of the very first Sunday School in America) in Rhode Island, and the interest has ever felt for this institution, has endeared him to every Sabbath School in our midst, as well as neighboring towns and States, and won from the children the endearing name of 'Grandpa Dexter', who will ever Revere his memory as they recall the many pleasant words spoken, and the kind token of affection left with them by way of remembrance. He withdrew from St. Paul's Church in 1823, and associated himself with the Universalist, since which time he has connected. Liberal in his religious views, he considered all of every denomination his brethren. On him the needy and afflicted found a cheerful giver and a sympathizing counselor. Our men with whom he associated in business relations will feel his loss, and our young men will miss his cheerful countenance and pleasant voice. But the curtness he possessed of never having smoked, chewed, or drank a glass of spirits, is well worthy of their imitation. He would have been 79 years of age the 25th of June next week. *Contributor: Devout Christian is a descendent, family researcher and historian.
