Capt S F McCants, a well-known businessman here and for many years a resident of Charleston, died this morning after an illness of several weeks. ~~The Gaffney Ledger (Gaffney, SC) Tuesday, 27 Apr 1909 Spartanburg April 24 – After an illness of two weeks, Capt S F McCants, a well-known business man of the city, died at his home on South Church Street yesterday morning, age 66. Capt McCants has been suffering from a serious heart affection for several months but was not forced to give up his business until about two weeks ago. Since then, he has been sinking rapidly and his friends saw that his chances of recovery were slight. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery. Capt McCants came to Spartanburg 30 years ago, when it was little more than a village. When he first came here, he opened a mercantile store which he conducted for several years, giving it up to accept a position as traveling salesman for a Charleston firm. Some years later he opened a plumbing business, the first of the kind in Spartanburg, which he continued till his death yesterday. He served throughout the Civil War, in which service he won his title. Capt McCants is survived by 2 sons, Melnot McCants, a railroad man in San Francisco and Robert McCants of Chicago. Also, his wife, Mrs Jennie M Doolittle.
