Description	:	William Whyte Palmer of Bennettsville, South Carolina, enlisted in the United States Regular Army on April 30th, 1917, at Memphis, Tennessee, and served as a Private in the 16th Aero Squadron to January 28th, 1918; promoted to Sergeant on April 30th, 1917; overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces from November 14th, 1917, to May 31st, 1919, serving in the Champagne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives; honorably discharged to accept a commission on January 28th, 1918; appointed as a First Lieutenant in the Air Service, Signal Corps, on January 29th, 1918; serving with the 88th Aero Squadron to 1918; serving with... For his actions in October 1918 he was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, and the Distinguished Service Cross for "...extraordinary heroism in action in the region of Doulcon, France, October 3, 1918. First Lieutenant Palmer encountered three enemy planes (Fokker type). Despite their numerical superiority, he attacked and in a decisive combat sent one down in flames and forced the other to retire."
