C. & Nealie McCauley. * * * * Obituary of Culpepper “Cull” Sikes from the Charlotte Observer of Wednesday, June 1, 1927. C. C. SIKES IS DEAD IN MONROE MONROE, May 31 – C. C. Sikes, prominent Monroe business man, died at his home here today after an illness of many months. He had sought relief in many hospitals, but doctors had failed to find a cure for the illness that proved fatal late this afternoon [May 31, 1927]. Mr. Sikes, a member of a Union County family of wide prominence, achieved fame as the county’s premier business leader. He was president of the Sikes Company, the Brewer-Griffin Mule Company, the Sikes-Collins Company, Waxhaw; the Long Mule Company, Matthews; the Stephens Mule Company, Chesterfield, S. C., and a director of the First National Bank of Monroe. A few months ago, he resigned active participation in business, relinquishing the management of his affairs to his son, Olin B. Sikes. Despite his business enterprise, Mr. Sikes was best known for his charitable work among the poor of Monroe and Union County. Funeral services will be conducted from the late home this afternoon at 4:30 o’clock and burial will be made here. Survivors are the widow, Cornelia McCauley Sikes, one daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hudson, Raleigh; two sons, Olin B. Sikes and Charles C. Sikes; one sister, Mrs. O. M. Sanders, of Monroe, and four brothers, Dr. E. W. Sikes, president of Clemson College; O. J. Sikes, attorney of Albemarle; V. D. Sikes and John C. Sikes, attorney, of this city. Another brother, Vann Sikes, died several years ago.
