Mr. Baker was born on December 8, 1927 on his family farm in Hillsboro, to his parents, the late Ruffin W. Baker and Marcia Elizabeth Mosher Baker. Curtis completed his first quarter at Tennessee Technology University before enlisting in the United States Army, with a tour of duty as a draftsman in the Philippines and Guam during World War II. Returning to Tennessee Tech and completing his junior year, he went to work at Oatland Island, Savannah, GA for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. After graduation from Tennessee Tech, Curtis went to work as a Chemist for the Tennessee Valley Authority in the water control laboratory. In 1956, Curtis became the third chemist hired in the chemistry lab at Arnold Air Force Base. Curtis retired 52 years later from his chemistry career and boyhood dream. Curtis was a devoted Christian, husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and patriot. He was always willing to help someone in need. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a member of the Prairie Plains Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon since 1965. He was a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge #382 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Curtis enjoyed raising cattle on his farm, as well as hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, Mr. Baker was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his son, Mary Crystal Brandon Baker, and a sister, Callie Elizabeth Baker. Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Mae Bonner Baker of Hillsboro; son, Steven Curtis (Betsy) Baker of Covington, GA; grandsons, Matt and Luke Baker, of Covington, GA; stepdaughters, Glenda Sue (Gordon) Smead of Nashville and Renee (Clyde Stephen) Matthews of Hillsboro; stepson, Gerald Bonner and fiancé, Loretta Boyd of Arlington, TN; step-granddaughters, Suzanne Smead of Nashville and Stephanie Matthews of Hillsboro; one sister, Wanda Baker Bush of Hillsboro; niece, Cynthia Bush Pellam of Hillsboro; and nephew, Freddie Bush of Hillsboro.
