Description	:	He was the son of Christian and Harriot (Firk) Brownfield. He was a steamboat captain; a photo of him is available in the Jeffcott papers collection at Western Washington University. He owned and commanded the stern-wheeler William F. Monroe; he took the 108' long ship on her trial trip in 1883. He was captain of the Chehalis sternwheeler on the Skagit River. The hulk of the Idaho was later put on pilings on the Seattle waterfront, and used as a hospital from about 1899-1907. On 30 Jun 1883, The Puget Sound Mail reported Capt Curtis Brownfield, having resigned command of the steamer Washington, has purchased a small steamer and will engage in the towing business. Oct 13 1883, the Puget Sound Mail noted "The ever-popular Capt Brownfield visits these waters occasionally in command of the steamer Gazelle, freighting between Seattle and points on the Nooksack.
