Berry Collides with Street Car --- Berry Charged with Drunken Driving and Manslaughter Custer Guy Dickey, 56, of this city was instantly killed Saturday evening [October 1, 1938] when the automobile in which he was riding, allegedly driven by Thomas B. Berry of Swan Lake, was in a head-on collision with a street car near the Gilbert residence in Hampden Highlands. State Trooper Dominique LaChance said Berry, who is at the Eastern Maine General hospital under treatment for fractured ribs and abrasions, would be charged with driving under the influenced of intoxicating liquor. Meanwhile State Police and county officials have continued investigation into the crash, with the possibility of further developments. A third man in the car, Ernest E. Burgess, also of Swan Lake, is in the hospital with minor injuries. Investigation by Trooper LaChance and Trooper Edward Thibedeau disclosed Berry's car left the highway as he drove in the direction of Belfast, went onto the car tracks and ploug[h]ed with terrific force squarely into the front of the electric car, which was on a return trip to Bangor. The crash occurred shortly before 8 o'clock, a few rods on the Bangor side of the curve in the highway and tracks just south of the residence of the late Fred A. Gilbert. The highway is straight and almost level at that point. The street car was being operated by Edgar Bille of Bangor. The old model car struck the street car with such force it telescoped its front wheels under the body of the car. Police found Dickey lying dead between the sidewalk and the car tracks. Berry was at the scene and Burgess was in the rear seat of the car. Dickey's death was apparently caused by a fractured neck. The injuries of the other two men are not regarded as serious. Berry was first taken to the Penobscot County jail and later removed to the hospital. Investigator Frank J. Rogan, representing County Attorney John T. Quinn, and Dr. Herbert C. Scribner, Penobscot county medical examiner, were the county officials participating in the probe. Custer Guy Dickey was born in Belfast Jan. 24, 1882, a son of Almerin and Eva Studley Dickey, and has always lived here. For many years he has resided at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Coleman Sheldon on Condon Street. He attended the city schools and early in life became interested in electrical work and for about 15 years was the Belfast's electrician. He was in business for a time with William H. Bray in an electrical store and in a moving picture house. In recent years he has been associated with Coleman Sheldon in a large and profitable poultry business including the farm they owned in Waldo. A sister, Mrs. Rose L. Sprague of this city, and three brothers, Harry of North Anson, Clarence and Will H. of Belfast, survive him. His funeral was held Tuesday at the Sheldon home with Rev. William Vaughn officiating and the internment was in Grove Cemetery. Thomas B. Berry of Swan Lake, alleged driver of the car in which Custer G. Dickey, 56 of Belfast, lost his life was charged formally with drunken driving and manslaughter Monday. State Trooper Dominique LaChance obtained two warrants in Bangor municipal court and will serve them upon Berry as soon as he is able to leave the Eastern Maine General hospital, where he is under treatment for fractured ribs.
