Burke was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Leavenworth, the son of Thomas P. and Elizabeth K. Wendell Burke. He had lived in Leavenworth all his life except for his time in the service. He began his military career with the Army in August 1944. He was an Army veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was the administrative supervisor and chief warrant officer of the Office of the Headquarters Commandant at Fort Leavenworth. Prior to his assignment at Fort Leavenworth, Master Sgt. Burke served with the Army Signal Depot in Saumor, France. Following his retirement in 1966, he worked for Midwest Marine in Leavenworth. For two years, he was a security guard for Cody Plaza apartments and for one year he was a maintenance man for Hillcrest Manor. He was assistant manager two years at Planters II. He was a member of the Church of Immaculate Conception and the American Legion Byron H. Mehl Post No. 23. He married Mabel Jost on Sept 11, 1952, in Easton. She preceded him in death Oct. 5, 1971. He is survived by a son and daughter in law, James and Karen Burke, Linwood; four sisters, Margaret Taylor, Haysville, Kan., and Agnes Klotz, Elizabeth "Beth" Burke and Nellie Tuttle, all of Leavenworth; a granddaughter Ginger Lee Burke, Linwood, and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Burke, June 13, 1966, and John A. Burke, April 8, 1989; and two sisters, Christina Crow, Dec. 25, 1981, and Marie Hatfield, March 25, 1981.
