(From the collection of Gwen Christie) Cyril Arthur Ernst, 76, Mader's Cove, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2005, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born at First Peninsula, he was the son of the late Arthur and Winnie (Langille) Ernst. As the most robust member of a large family, Cyril displayed precocious ability in many areas. As a nine year old boy, he drove a new team of oxen from Blockhouse to his home single handedly. At 12 years of age, he and his brother did a complete valve job on a car. In high school he was known for his intelligence and through the years would occaionally boast how the math teacher would get him to show the class how to do the difficult problems. At this time he also served in the army reserve. As a young man he was active in the local hockey scene. Cyril enjoyed being a referee and was a man to be feared when a fight broke out on the ice. He took over the family farm from his father and ran a dairy operation for most of his working life, except for a period when he worked as building supervisor erecting Butler Buildings for several farms in the Annapolis Valley area. Until his marriage in 1960, he was active in dory racing, winning the International double dory championship for Lunenburg in 1959 and 1960 with his dory mate, Dave Creaser, with whom he set the second best recorded time in the history of the race. His farming days gave him scope for his ingenuity and love of animals. He designed and built a successful artificial leg for one of his cattle. He successfully reattached a teat on his prize cow when the vet said it couldn't be done. All of his cows had names and knew them. In retirement he cared for three elderly family members in Mader's Cove for a period of seven years where his love of animals carried over into feeding the birds and deer regularly, with several sea gulls making daily stops there for chicken weiners. He served a term on Lunenburg Municipal Council, and loved a good conversation about politics. He was a faithful blood donor, having made 76 donations. Cyril was a man of strong convictions with a big heart who cared very deeply about those close to him and always took the side of the underdog. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Ann Pittman; son, Gregg (Jennie), First Peninsula; daughter, Trudi (Daryl) Buote, Quispamsis, New Brunswick; sisters, Mary Veinot, Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg; Eloise (Ingar) Karlsen, Ivy (Bruce) Ramey, both of Hamilton, Ontario; Lucille Mosher, Northwest; Doris Ernst, First Peninsula; brother, Winston, Peterborough, Ontatio; grandchildren, Joshua, Marja, John, Peter, Eligah, Eva, Ruth, Esther, Nathan, and Samuel Ernst; Noah and Gillian Buote. He was predeceased by his parents; grandson, Thomas Ernst; brothers, Alton, Herbert, and John. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg, with visitation today from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Central United Church, Lunenburg Rev. Christopher Emery officiating. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, Calvary Temple, or a charity of choice.
