Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where a vigil service will be at 4 p.m. Cyril was born on July 20, 1925, in rural Otter Creek, son of John and Kate (Hazer) Ehlinger. He married Avalene Small on Sept. 16, 1952. Together they farmed in the South Garryowen area, where they raised their eight children. He is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 59 years, Avie; their five sons; three daughters, 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Left to honor his memory are his wife, Avalene "Avie" Ehlinger of Bernard; eight children, Gary Ehlinger and Carol, of Maquoketa, Debra Oldham and Philip Ehlinger, both of Davenport, Randy Ehlinger, of Zwingle, Greg Ehlinger and Lori, of Bernard, Sandra (Jeff) Mason, of De Witt, Lynn (Sharon) Ehlinger, of La Motte, and Lori (Dave) Serrano, of Davenport. Cy loved spending time with his 12 grandchildren, Tonya Nims, Craig Ehlinger, Keith, Chelsea and Christa Oldham, Jack and Benjamin Mason and Nicholas, Natalie, Nathaniel, Nolan and Nora Ehlinger, who will cherish the memories of Grandpa and his fun and exciting 4-wheeler rides through the pasture gates to hunt for morels or to tour the cave on the family farm. He is also survived by his brother, Kenny Ehlinger, of Maquoketa; sisters-in-law, Bessie Ehlinger and Mary Ehlinger, both of Dubuque, and Dorothy Ehlinger, of La Motte; also Carmie Decker, of Bernard, Shirley Small, of Maquoketa, Loras and Margie Small, of La Motte, and Teresa Hosch, of Maquoketa. Cy was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gerald Ehlinger (wife, Maxine), Julien Ehlinger, Loren Ehlinger, Wilford Ehlinger (wife, Florence), and Leroy Ehlinger; his sister, Rosemary Lyons (husband, T.J.) and a sister-in-law, Dora Ehlinger. He also was preceded by Ignatius McDonnell, Clarence and Shirley Small, Claire Small and Richard Hosch.
