Cronk was born in Broome County, New York, January 28, 1841, dying at Estherville, Iowa March 2, 1916, aged 75 years. He lost his father in infancy and at the age of 17, removed with his mother to Illinois. September 18, 1861, as a youth of 19, he enlisted in the Union Army in the 8th Illinois Cavalry and his most active regiment saw four years of hard service until the close of the war. On being mustered out, he immediately came to Iowa in the fall of 1865, passing the entire remainder of his life in this state. May 17, 1866, he was married to Miss Mary Roberts, whose loss he was caused to mourn May 17, 1890. To this union were born, three daughters and one son: Mrs. Cora Smith, Halfa, Iowa; Mrs. Bertha Waterman, Estherville, Iowa; Mrs. Mina Smith, Armstrong, Iowa; and Ralph E. Cronk, Waterloo, Iowa; all of whom with 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren survive him. On October 4, 1920 he was married to Mrs. Mina Peck of Elgin, Illinois, who lives to cherish his memory. Mr. Cronk lived on a farm near Montour for about 30 years, raising his family there. In 1904, he removed to Estherville, there passing the rest of his life. The 8th Illinois Cavalry is distinguished by firing the first gun in the picket line in the great battle of Gettysburg, and as acting as President Lincoln's body guard in the fall of 1861. During the four years of the war, 4,300 men saw service in this regiment, and there remained only 600 to be mustered out at the close, the others being either killed, wounded or unaccounted for. So ends the life of another of Iowa's old pioneers, whose life helped to make Old Iowa, and helped to save the Union. The body was brought to Montour Saturday evening, and on Sunday afternoon at 2:00, funeral services were held from the home of a nephew of the deceased, J. W. Cronk, Rev. Webster of the Congregational church having charge of the service. Many were the friends and old acquaintances who gathered to pay their last respect to the memory of the departed. The remains were laid to rest in maple Hill Cemetery by the side of the wife who preceded him. Members of his family attending the service from a distance were his widow, Mrs. Mina Cronk of Estherville; a daughter Mrs. William Waterman and son of Estherville; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith and son of Halfa; and a niece, Mrs. C.
