Read More	Highland Recorder February 5, 1937 The body of Cyrus Helmick, 18, son of Eli Helmick, who lives in the Thorny Bottom vicinity, was found dead and lying in the middle of the road, at the intersection of the Franklin Highway and the Strait Creek road. Mr. and Mrs. Junk Puffenberger were returning to their home from a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. White about one o’clock Sunday morning, Jan. 31st, when, they discovered, the limp form of Helmick lying in the road. Sheriff I.D. Gutshall, Dr. C.B. Fox, coroner, and R. Turner Jones, commonwealth’s attorney, the latter was out of town at the time. The officers identified the body and pronounced death was caused by suicide. A .22-caliber rifle was found near the body, the bullet from which having entered the body a little above the heart. Powder burns indicated the gun had been pressed against the body. The stock of the gun was broken and two empty shells were found near the scene of the tragedy. Helmick wrote the following note just before he left his home about midnight, and which was found, when investigation seeking a cause for the rash deed began. The note said to be in his handwriting read, “The money in my pocket is Pap’s. The dog to Bennie. Shot gun to Frank. The other gun to Lester.” Only fourteen cents were found in his pocket at the time, and it is supposed the money referred to was possibly a small sum he gave his father when he returned home a few days prior. He had been working in Pendleton County and had only returned to his home. The youth, with his brother spent awhile Saturday afternoon in Monterey, and while in town seemed as cheerful as heretofore. No motive for the deed has, as yet, been reported to this office. He lost his mother a few months ago and it has been suggested that perhaps her death had caused a despondency. The deceased is survived by his father, and a number of sisters and brothers, with whom he had made his home. He was unmarried.
