Cyrus Carnes married Eliza Heminger in Union County, OH, on January 7, 1854. CYRUS CARNES At his home, west of town, on last Thursday, occurred the death of Cyrus Carnes, one of our highly esteemed citizens and one of Starke county's pioneers. Mr. Carnes had reached the advanced age of 79 years and up to three weeks ago when his illness came upon him he was remarkably active for one who was about to reach the four-score mark in the great and mysterious wheel of time. For three weeks previous to his death he was seriously afflicted with heart trouble, but during the last week or ten days he seemed to be recovering very nicely. On last Thursday, Mr. Carnes sat down to the table and ate dinner with his family, and was apparently in good spirits. Shortly afterwards, without any warning, he dropped dead in the room. The fatal hour had come and a long and useful life departed the shores touched by the mysterious sea that has never yet borne on any wave the image of a returning sail. Cyrus Carnes was born February 27, 1827, in Knox county, Ohio. In young manhood he moved to Union county, Ohio, where he was married to Eliza Herninger, to which union one child was born, Wm. H. of Wellington, Kansas. Just before the Civil War he married Mrs. Katherine Welch, who survives to mourn his death. During the civil war, Cyrus Carnes migrated to this state, forming with others from his native state a Buckeye colony in this vicinity. Shortly after reaching this state, he enlisted with company E, of the 58th Indiana volunteer regiment, serving until the close of the war. He died on August 23, 1906, at the age of 79 years. Deceased leaves besides a sorrowing wife; four children who mourn his death, Wm. H. of Wellington, Kansas, Kirby, Sherman and his daughter, Eupha, all of this place. Funeral was conducted at the home last Sunday by Rev. J. O. Johnson, who delivered a most beautiful and appropriate sermon. Burial was made in the San Pierre cemetery. The funeral was an extremely large one. The pall bearers were L. C. Foust, O. D. Brown, W. Y. Hine, W. H. Replogle, Al Mosher and James Jarrett.
