Edward Lay 2000: The Irish Cosbys had been in Virginia since 1626. One of that talented lineage, Dabney Cosby, was born in Louisa County on 11 August 1779. Cosby was the principal brickmason for Hotels D and E and for eight student rooms at the University of Virginia for Thomas Jefferson. Of the several recommendations in 1819 supporting his application to work at the university, one was from the noted Virginia legislator and judge Archibald Stuart of Staunton. Stuart, who had built for himself in 1791 one of the earliest examples of a tetrastyle porticoed house in Virginia, stated that "Dabney Cosby . . . is a man of Industry, Energy and I believe Capacity and may be relyed on to execute whatever he undertakes. Mr. C. has for years been more extensively employed in his line than any man in the county." In 1821, he wrote the proctor of the university that "should it be deemed advisable to proceed to the erection of the pantheon [Rotunda] this season, and I be consider'd trustyworthy, it would be a source of much pride and gratification to me, to see it executed in a stile, which for neatness and strength, should equal it in importance, and granduer of design." The Rotunda job did not materialize for him. By this time he had moved from Louisa County to Staunton, along with his wife, Frances Davenport Tapp Cosby, who was of Welsh descent, their fourteen children, and twenty-three slaves. Two sons became architects: Dabney Minor Cosby (1813-1898) in Halifax County and John Wayt Cosby (b. 1815) in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1824 Dabney Cosby moved to Buckingham County and by 1830 to Prince Edward County. He continued his distinguished career, constructing college buildings, churches, and courthouses throughout Southside Virginia. Among the Virginia buildings attributed to him are Randolph-Macon College (1830) then located in Mecklenburg County, Venable Hall at Hampden-Sydney College (1830) in Prince Edward County, Tabb Street Presbyterian Church (1844) in Petersburg (for architect Thomas U. Walter), and county courthouses in Buckingham (1822), Goochland (1826), Lunenburg (1827), Sussex (1828), and Halifax (1838). In 1839 he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he built about thirty more buildings. He also worked with architect A. J. Davis on university buildings at Chapel Hill.
