Schantz Daislea Rardin, daughter of Stephen Decatur and Dollie Evelyn Rardin, was born Jan. 20, 1896, at Ridgeway in Harrison county, Missouri, and departed this life Sept. 21, 1968, at the Decatur County hospital, Leon, Iowa, at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 1 day. Daislea lived in Ridgeway, Mo., throughout her girlhood and was educated in the Ridgeway public school, after which she attended college in Kansas City, Mo. Later she went to Los Angeles, Calif., where she lived for several years and where she encouraged other members of her family to join her in the hope that the mild climate might be of benefit to her mother, who was in poor health. In 1933 she and her family returned to the Midwest and she established a home in Lamoni for her father and mother and for her brother Paul and two sons, Paul Robert and Marion. Always very concerned about the welfare of members of her family, she felt that the Lamoni community offered many advantages and educational opportunities for the boys. Following the deaths of her father and mother, Daislea and her brother lived for a while in Bethany, Mo. Later she lived for some time in Des Moines and in 1947 was united in marriage to Frederick Schantz of Cedar Rapids, and they made their home there. In 1961 they moved to the Lamoni community to be near her sister and family, Mr. ad Mrs. Earl Rauch and son Rardin and her brother Paul, who made his home with them and assisted in caring for them. Daislea underwent surgery for cataracts and for some time was able to continue to care for her husband and home. He became disabled and unable to walk, and was a resident at Westview Acres in Leon for several years. On June 15, 1968, he passed away at the Decatur County hospital, Leon, Iowa. Daislea's health failed seriously through the summer, but she desired to be in her own home and do for herself as much as possible. On Sept. 21 she met with a most tragic accident. As she was preparing her noon meal, her clothing caught fire from the gas flame and she was so seriously burned that she died just after entering the hospital. She is survived by her sister Dorothy, her husband Earl ad their son Hardin; her brother Paul and his (illegible), Master Sergeant Paul Robert Rardin, wife (illegible) and their children, daughter Evelyn and son Bobby of Layton, Utah, and Major (illegible) A. Hardin, wife Marjorie and their children, son Michael and daughter Melissa of Boise, Idaho; and by an aunt, Mrs. Lou Wellenger of Beaumont, Calif. Several cousins and their families also survive. At an early age, Daislea was baptized into the Christian church at Ridgway, Mo. She kept her membership in it all her lifetime. She felt a dedication to this church because her grandfather and grandmother were charter members and worked devotedly to establish and maintain this particular church. Always deeply sensitive to the needs of others, especially those less fortunate than herself, she was a kind and loving friend and neighbor, and she will be missed very greatly by those who were privileged to know her and by members of her family. Funeral services were held Tuesday Sept 24, 1968, at the Lamoni United Methodist church. Rev. Gary Bird officiated, assisted by Elder Percy Howard. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.* NOTE: Daislea was born under the name Daisy Lea.
