RUARK, 82, RETIRED ADVERTISING MANAGER PULLMAN: Dale Andrew Ruark, 82, former advertising manager of the Pullman Herald, died Wednesday at Palouse Hills Nursing Center of congestive heart failure. He was born Nov. 20, 1910, at Mayview, Wash., near Pomeroy to John Cleveland and Cora Ruark. He graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1929 and attended Washington State University for one year. He married Marie Obenland July 31, 1932, at Clarkston. He was employed by Safeway stores at Pomeroy, Lewiston and Moscow before transferring to Pullman in the mid-1930s to become manager of the Pullman Safeway. In 1938, he became the advertising manager for the former Pullman Herald weekly newspaper. He continued in that capacity until retirement in 1974. He was instrumental in publishing the newspaper's 50th, 75th and 85th anniversary special sections. He helped start the downtown sales celebration Crazy Days, and also assisted in setting up the citywide open house for retail establishments. In 1954, he was president of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce and served in several civic organizations, including Rotary, the Good Fellowship Club, Moscow Elks Lodge, the now-defunct Pullman Better Business Bureau, the chamber board of directors and he served as chairman of the Crazy Days sales event. In 1940, the first Calam Temple of the Shrine football game program was organized under his leadership at Pullman. He enjoyed music and had his own dance band, which played for fraternity dances and numerous community organizations. He played the drums. He was a skilled fisherman and hunter and an avid supporter of WSU athletics. He is survived by his wife, Marie Ruark, at their Pullman home; two daughters, Kay Grover of Vancouver, Wash., and Dixie Braden of Erlanger, Ky.; a brother, Harry Ruark of Lewiston; a sister, Stella Hooshagen of Pomeroy; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Pomeroy City Cemetery. The Rev. Gordon L. Braun of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Moscow will officiate for the service. Memorials may be made to the Pullman Memorial Hospital Foundation, NE 1125 Washington Ave., Pullman, Wash., 99163.
